How Jenna Fischer and James Gunn met
Gunn told St. Louis Magazine that they met through his brother Sean, who had acted in high-school plays with Fischer. When Gunn was making The Specials, Fischer read for a principal female role. Gunn said they began dating about a year later.

When they married, separated and divorced
Fischer and Gunn married in 2000. The Associated Press reported on September 7, 2007, that they had separated after six years of marriage. Later biographical coverage dates their divorce to 2008.
What they said when they announced the separation
The couple’s joint statement, reproduced by the Associated Press in a report carried by the Los Angeles Times, expressed support for one another but did not explain why they were separating:

“We are sorry for any pain this causes family and friends. The enthusiasm we have for each other’s lives, spirits and careers is real—we have been each other’s cheerleader and friend during the past six years and continue to be so now and in the future.”
How they described their relationship after divorce
In a 2011 interview with St. Louis Magazine, Gunn said he and Fischer were still close and saw each other frequently. He joked, “We weren’t the best at being married, but we’re the very best at being divorced.” He also said Fischer encouraged him to make Super and suggested Rainn Wilson for its lead role.

Their professional history included more than The Specials: Gunn directed Slither, in which Fischer co-starred, and they were also connected through LolliLove. Those shared projects provide context for their relationship, not an explanation for its ending.

The public comments cited here do not establish a specific private reason for the separation. Fischer spoke in a 2011 Redbook interview about expecting to embrace single life after her divorce, but mostly staying home with her cat. She also recalled relationship advice from The Office executive producer Paul Lieberstein: “Finding love is not as hard as picking the right person to spend the rest of your life with.” She discussed compatibility and shared goals in general; she did not identify them as the cause of her marriage ending.
