Gandalf’s change from Grey to White is a genuine transformation after his death, and it gives him renewed authority and a renewed mission. He takes the place Saruman has forfeited, but Tolkien describes the Wizards’ purpose as guiding and inspiring the Free Peoples—not ruling them by force. The story makes those points explicit; a single, definitive meaning for the colour white is not.
What happens when Gandalf returns?
Gandalf falls with the Balrog in Moria. After a period beyond ordinary death, he returns and confronts Saruman at Orthanc. There he declares, “I am Gandalf the White, who has returned from death.” He tells Saruman, “You have no colour now,” removes him from the order and the Council, and breaks his staff.
The scene shows that the change is more than a new appearance. Gandalf now has authority over Saruman, whose betrayal has cost him his place. Tolkien Gateway likewise summarizes Gandalf’s return as his replacement of Saruman as chief of the Wizards, but the confrontation in The Two Towers is the clearest evidence for what the story depicts. What did Tolkien say the transformation means?
In Letter 156, Tolkien says Gandalf really died and was changed. He explains that the Istari—the Wizards sent to Middle-earth—were incarnate messengers whose task was to guide and inspire the Free Peoples to resist Sauron through their own strength, rather than dominate them with overwhelming power. Tolkien also describes Gandalf’s sacrifice against the Balrog as entrusting the matter to the Authority that ordained the Rules.

This explanation supports reading Gandalf’s return as both a real transformation and a renewed commission. His greater authority does not turn his mission into rule by force. Does white have one definitive symbolic meaning?
The text and Tolkien’s letter establish the death, transformation, and change in authority. Readers may also take white to suggest renewal or rightful authority, especially in contrast to Saruman’s claim to be “of Many Colours.” Those are plausible literary interpretations, not a single colour code that Tolkien’s explanation confirms as definitive.

Likewise, when Gandalf tells Saruman, “You have no colour now,” the line marks Saruman’s forfeited position in this confrontation. It should not be treated as proof of a universal or technical system of colour symbolism across Tolkien’s writing.
