Twitch does not publish a single list of banned emote images. Emotes fall under the same Community Guidelines as chat and streams, and three kinds of emote content are clearly prohibited: emotes that express hateful conduct or demeaning stereotypes, emotes used for sexual harassment, and sexual or nude content. Twitch also says its emote standards can be stricter than its general rules, so an emote that passes in ordinary chat can still be rejected.
What Twitch prohibits in emotes
Twitch’s Community Guidelines, published by the Twitch Safety Center, apply to emotes the same way they apply to messages and video. The guidelines name specific areas where emote use is restricted. Each one is described below, with the wording Twitch uses where it matters.
Hateful conduct and negative stereotypes
Twitch prohibits hateful conduct based on protected characteristics. Its examples include speech, imagery, or emote combinations that dehumanize people or perpetuate negative stereotypes or memes. The guidelines give examples such as black, brown, yellow, and redface imagery, and imagery that compares a protected group with animals considered inferior or unclean. These are examples, not a complete catalog, so an emote does not need to match one of them word for word to fall under the rule.
Sexual harassment carried by an emote
Twitch’s rules against sexual harassment cover emotes directly. In a July 23, 2024 clarification titled “How We’re Combatting Sexual Harassment on Twitch,” the Twitch Safety Center stated:

“We prohibit unwanted comments–including comments made using emojis/emotes–regarding someone’s appearance or body, sexual requests or advances, sexual objectification, and negative statements or attacks related to a person’s perceived sexual behaviors or activities, regardless of their gender.”
The practical point is that the emote is judged by how it is used. A sexual emote sent at a specific person as an unwanted comment about their body, a sexual advance, or an attack on their sexual behavior falls under this rule. Context and whether the conduct is unwanted both matter.

Sexual and nude material
Twitch applies its sexual-content and nudity policies to emotes, badges, and cheermotes. The Community Guidelines prohibit pornographic content and specified explicit, simulated, fictional, or implied sexual activity. They also separately prohibit real or fictional depictions of nudity, subject to stated policy exceptions. The guidelines direct readers to the separate Emote Guidelines for the specific standards that apply to emote images.
Ordinary emotes used to target someone
An emote that is not prohibited in itself can still break the rules if it is used to harass someone or to deliver hateful conduct. Twitch’s framework applies across content types, so the question is what the message does to a person, not only what the image shows.

Why emote rules can be stricter than chat rules
Twitch explains the difference directly. The Community Guidelines state:
“Because subscriber emotes are available for use globally across Twitch and highly visible outside of their original channels, our emote guidelines may be more restrictive than our general Community Guidelines in some instances.”

A subscriber emote created for one channel can appear in chat on other channels, so an image that might be acceptable in a narrow setting can be judged against a wider audience. This is why a creator should not assume that a borderline emote is safe because a general chat message containing similar content would pass.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Judging a borderline emote
Twitch does not publish a scoring method for emotes. The following questions reflect the categories in Twitch’s official guidance and are useful for reviewing an emote before you submit or use it:
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- What does the image depict? Check for hateful imagery, stereotypes, sexual material, or nudity. Each of these is a separate category in the guidelines.
- Does it target a person or a protected group? An emote aimed at a specific individual or identity group carries more risk than a neutral image.
- How is it used? The same emote can be harmless as a reaction and prohibited when sent as unwanted sexual commentary.
- Who will see it? Subscriber emotes are visible outside their original channel, which Twitch cites as the reason for stricter emote standards.
Limits of the published guidance
The general prohibited categories above are stated clearly in Twitch’s Community Guidelines and in the July 2024 clarification. The image-specific standards in Twitch’s separate Emote Guidelines were not available for this review, so this article does not describe their detailed criteria. Anyone with a borderline emote should read Twitch’s current Emote Guidelines directly before relying on a decision.
No public enforcement statistics specifically about prohibited emotes were found. Twitch’s policies are updated over time, so the dated July 23, 2024 clarification is the most recent dated statement confirmed here, and the Community Guidelines text should be checked against the live Twitch Safety Center page.
