Netflix did not acquire Warner Bros. Paramount Skydance completed the takeover on October 6, 2026, and Harry Potter is now part of the combined company’s portfolio. The latest cited plan for the remake remains an eight-episode HBO series debuting at Christmas 2026, but the available announcements do not confirm whether the new owner has changed that plan.
Did Netflix buy Warner Bros.?
No. Paramount Skydance completed its takeover of Warner Bros. on October 6, 2026. The Associated Press reported the deal at $81 billion, or nearly $111 billion including debt. Those figures describe Paramount’s completed transaction, not a Netflix acquisition.
Netflix had proposed a separate Warner Bros. transaction valued at $82.7 billion in 2025, but that proposal did not close. In its December 5, 2025 announcement about the proposed deal, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos said combining Warner Bros.’ library, including Harry Potter, with Netflix titles would let the company serve audiences better. That statement described the proposal, not the ownership outcome.
Who owns Harry Potter now?
Harry Potter is among the franchises in the portfolio under Paramount Skydance following the Warner Bros. takeover, according to the Associated Press’s October 7, 2026 report. That establishes the corporate ownership context; it does not, by itself, establish a change to the series’ production, creative team, or distribution arrangements.

Is the Harry Potter remake still coming out in 2026?
The latest cited release plan is still Christmas 2026. That is the window in HBO’s series announcement; the available sources do not establish a post-acquisition confirmation or a revised date. It is therefore more precise to describe Christmas 2026 as the announced plan than as a newly reconfirmed post-close decision.
Will the series move from HBO to Netflix?
No move to Netflix has been announced in the sources cited here. The series was announced for HBO, with streaming on HBO Max where available. A change in the parent company’s ownership does not itself demonstrate that HBO’s announced distribution plan has changed.

The available announcements do not establish that Paramount Skydance has altered the series’ release date, commissioning, creative leadership, distribution, or branding.
