Scroll.in reported the clip on June 5, 2021, and the accompanying social post described Ozawa as an Alzheimer’s sufferer. The reporting supports the escort. It does not show how Ozawa moved on his own, which concert he was attending, or what his cognitive state was. Ozawa died on February 6, 2024, at the age of 88, so the headline’s “now suffering” describes his condition in 2021, not today.
What the 2021 clip shows
The clip circulated with a social media post dated June 4, 2021, from the account Haroun Rashid (@HarounRashid2). Scroll.in embedded that post in its June 5, 2021 article, and the article’s own account is that fellow conductor Zubin Mehta escorted Ozawa to the podium. That is the central, sourced event.
The headline’s verb, “climbs on,” is not the reporting’s description. Nothing in the article establishes that Ozawa climbed the steps unaided. The reporting also does not identify the venue, the program, the filming date, or the original publisher of the footage. Treat the clip as an archival video with limited provenance rather than a fully documented concert account.
Claims in the reporting, and how firmly each is established
The table separates what the sources state from what the headline and the post imply.

| Claim | Where it appears | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Mehta escorted Ozawa to the podium | Scroll.in, June 5, 2021 | Reported in the article; the clip is the basis for it |
| Ozawa climbed onto the podium on his own | Headline wording only | Not established by the reporting |
| Ozawa had Alzheimer’s | The 2021 headline and post; NPO Klassiek states he had Alzheimer’s in the final years of his life | Reported. No direct medical statement, physician, or family interview was found to confirm the diagnosis |
| “Apparently you don’t forget music in Alzheimer’s” | Social post by Haroun Rashid, June 4, 2021, quoted by Scroll.in | The poster’s interpretation, not a clinical finding |
| Ozawa appeared to remember the music | Post accompanying the clip | The poster’s reading of the footage; no expert or first-hand account confirms it |
| Ozawa died on February 6, 2024, aged 88 | New Japan Philharmonic and Boston Symphony Orchestra, both 2024 | Confirmed by both orchestras |
No named medical expert comment on Alzheimer’s and musical memory appeared in the sources reviewed. The footage cannot settle questions about cognition, and it should not be used to infer them. The social post is best read as a viewer’s reaction to a moving scene, not as evidence about Ozawa’s health.

A later event, not the 2021 clip
NPO Klassiek reports that in 2022 Ozawa conducted Beethoven’s Egmont Overture by live video connection, seated in a wheelchair. That performance is a separate, later event. It should not be read as a continuation of the 2021 footage or as the same scene.
Tributes after his death
The Seiji Ozawa Matsumoto Festival held a tribute on August 17, 2024, and announced a free YouTube release timed to September 1, his 89th birthday. The festival’s announcement is the source for the release date; readers looking for the release itself should check the festival’s channel directly.

How to check a viral conducting clip
- Find the earliest post or publisher. Note whether it names a venue, orchestra, or program. If it names none, say so when you share it.
- Compare the event with the orchestra’s own concert archive or season listings for the date claimed.
- Separate what the caption says from what the footage shows. “Escorted” and “climbs” describe different actions.
- Look for a medical or family source before repeating any diagnosis. A caption is not one.
- Check for later reporting that changes the picture, including confirmed dates such as those for Ozawa’s death.
Applied to this clip, the steps confirm the escort and the 2021 timing, and they leave the venue, the program, and the diagnosis unresolved.
