Weapons is a 2025 horror mystery that turns a classroom disappearance into a tense, unsettling community story. Its interwoven chapters and atmosphere are compelling; its characters and supernatural payoff are more divisive. This spoiler-free review explains who is likely to enjoy the ride.
What is Weapons about?
Written and directed by Zach Cregger, Weapons begins with an unnerving event: 17 children from one classroom get up and disappear at 2:17 a.m. One child is left behind. Rather than follow a single detective through a straightforward investigation, the film shifts among people whose lives are affected by the disappearance. The mystery is the engine; the community’s reaction gives it human scale. The Associated Press describes the story as exploring the ripple effects of a tragic event.
That premise is best encountered with as little advance explanation as possible. The film’s chapters gradually change what the audience knows, and revealing how the mystery works would spoil a central pleasure.
Does the chapter structure build suspense?
The shifting perspectives give the film room to make the disappearance feel larger than one person’s problem. Each chapter changes the angle on the events, adding context and unease rather than simply advancing a conventional investigation. For viewers who enjoy mysteries that withhold information and let details accumulate, that design is a strength.

It can also interrupt momentum. The Guardian calls the film a “bumpy ride,” praising its mood and cast while arguing that characterization is thin and the storytelling falters before the ending. The Associated Press likewise describes an ambitious interwoven story that can lag. The Guardian review and the AP review illustrate why the structure will work better for some viewers than others.
Is Weapons scary?
Its most effective tool is sustained dread: the sense that something is badly wrong even when the film is not relying on a sudden jolt. The mystery, the chapter shifts, and the film’s mood work together to keep the unease alive. Reviews from BFI and Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus emphasize the elaborate, jolting mystery, though that does not mean every scare will land equally for every viewer.

The film also makes room for dark, awkward humor. That tonal mix sometimes sharpens the discomfort rather than releasing it: a strange or comic reaction can make a disturbing scene feel more human and more unsettling at once. In an Associated Press interview, Cregger explained his principle: “If the humor is coming from an authentic reaction that a character’s having, then it works.” That is his approach, not a guarantee that every comic beat will suit every viewer.
Do the characters and ending deliver?
The film’s many viewpoints help establish how widely the disappearance affects the community, but that breadth comes at a cost: some characters can feel more useful to the unfolding plot than fully developed in their own right. The result is a story that is ambitious in construction but not always equally intimate.

The ending is the clearest point of critical disagreement. The Guardian finds the storytelling uneven on the way there, and AP objects to the supernatural resolution. Other critics, including BFI and Rotten Tomatoes’ consensus, respond more favorably to the film’s intricate, jolting mystery. The payoff may satisfy viewers who value a bold explanation and a strong final movement; those who want every earlier mystery resolved in a way that feels fully earned may be less persuaded. Avoid spoilers if you have not seen it.
Is Weapons worth watching?
Yes, if you want a horror film built around a gripping unanswered question, an accumulating atmosphere, and a story that changes perspective as it unfolds. It is less certain as a recommendation for viewers who need consistently deep characterization or a resolution that leaves no major doubts. Weapons is more fascinating than perfectly controlled: the chapters make the mystery feel expansive, while the uneven pacing and divisive ending keep it from being an unqualified success.
