The rumor was real as a piece of 2024 reporting, but it was never confirmed: io9/Gizmodo said an unnamed source described Christopher Nolan’s next film as a vampire movie set in the 1920s. Universal later identified the film as The Odyssey, a mythic action epic based on Homer’s saga, released in theaters July 17, 2026.
What was the rumor?
On October 21, 2024, Germain Lussier reported for io9/Gizmodo that a “reliable source” had told the outlet Nolan’s next film was “a vampire movie set in the 1920s.” The source was not named, so readers could not independently assess the claim.
The article said io9 had contacted Universal but had not received a response by publication. That makes the vampire premise an unconfirmed report—not a studio announcement, a confirmed plot, or proof of what Nolan planned to make.
What film did Universal officially announce?
Universal later identified Nolan’s film as The Odyssey, an adaptation of Homer’s foundational saga. Universal Pictures Canada describes it as “a mythic action epic shot across the world using brand new IMAX® film technology” and says it brings the story to IMAX screens for the first time. The film’s official release date was July 17, 2026; Universal’s film page now labels it “Now Playing In Theaters.”

Universal says the film was shot entirely with IMAX film cameras. NBCUniversal’s 2026 CinemaCon announcement also gave the July 17 IMAX opening and described the production as shot entirely with IMAX cameras. That production detail does not validate the earlier vampire claim; the official title and Homer connection are the later, authoritative description of the film.
