The moment that stands out in Star Trek: Lower Decks’ “Fissure Quest” is the reveal that alternate-universe Elim Garak and Julian Bashir are husbands. For the December 13, 2024, All County Gazette article credited to A C Gazette, the surprise matters less as a twist than as a brief, tender payoff to a relationship many Deep Space Nine fans had long read romantically.
Which Lower Decks episode is this?
“Fissure Quest” is Lower Decks Season 5, Episode 9, the episode discussed in the All County Gazette article. Apple TV’s Canadian listing gives its release date as December 12, 2024, and its runtime as 27 minutes; the US listing displays December 11, 2024. Those dates differ by territory, so “this week” refers to the article’s publication context, not a universal release date. Apple TV’s Canadian episode listing and its US listing identify the episode; Paramount+’s series page describes the show as following a support crew aboard a Starfleet ship.
Why Garak and Bashir’s reveal lands
As the Gazette article recounts it, William Boimler’s alternate-reality crew includes Garak as a Starfleet medical officer and a holographic Bashir. The startling detail is that the two are married. The article’s author singles out their affectionate interaction and their disagreement over which universe to settle in: the argument carries emotional weight because both characters are trying to choose a shared home.
That domestic tenderness gives a familiar fan interpretation a short, unexpectedly explicit moment. On Deep Space Nine, Garak and Bashir’s chemistry invited romantic readings, but their relationship was never established as a marriage in the original series. “Fissure Quest” instead offers alternate versions whose bond is stated as marital. The distinction matters: this is not a retroactive declaration about the prime-timeline DS9 characters.

What the moment does—and does not—resolve
The scene’s appeal, in the Gazette writer’s reading, is its combination of surprise and emotional closure. Rather than merely winking at a fan pairing, it gives these alternate characters tenderness and a practical question to face together: where will they make a life? The idea that they are each other’s home is an interpretation of that exchange, not a claim that the episode settles every question about Garak and Bashir across the franchise.
That is why the moment can feel meaningful without changing the original series. The married couple exists in the alternate reality presented in “Fissure Quest”; the long-standing romantic reading of the DS9 pair remains a fan interpretation of the original characters.

Why this is the week’s standout moment
“Best” is a personal judgment, not an episode ranking. For the Gazette article’s author, the standout is a brief reunion of character chemistry, an affectionate reveal, and a shared emotional choice. Its significance comes from how directly it grants an alternate version of a beloved, often-discussed pairing the relationship many viewers had imagined—while keeping that payoff bounded to this episode’s alternate universe.
