Taylor Swift paired “We Were Happy” and “happiness” in a piano mash-up during the surprise-song section of her July 23, 2024 Eras Tour concert at Volksparkstadion in Hamburg, Germany. It was the live debut of both songs. Fan-recorded clips are available, but the sources documenting the performance do not establish an official release of the mash-up.
What Swift performed in Hamburg
The concert was the first of Swift’s two Hamburg dates. The city and venue are listed in Swift’s official tour archive, and Rolling Stone’s July 24, 2024 report identifies it as the first Hamburg show.
In the acoustic surprise-song segment, Swift first performed “Teardrops on My Guitar” with “The Last Time” on guitar, then moved to the piano for “We Were Happy” and “happiness.” The detailed set order and instruments are recorded by the community-edited Hamburg setlist.
Why the mash-up stood out
Both songs made their live debuts that night. Before performing them, Swift told the crowd, “So these next ones I’ve never played live,” as quoted in Rolling Stone’s account. An August 7, 2024 setlist.fm tour update also lists the Hamburg night-one pairing as a live debut for both tracks.
