BBC history records a repeat broadcast when its television service resumed in 1946, and a reference overview describes a newsreel repeated on the BBC’s opening day in 1936. The BBC dates Doctor Who’s television debut to 23 November 1963.
What counts as a rerun?
The answer depends on what you mean by “rerun.” It can mean any programme transmitted again, a deliberate replay of something previously broadcast, or the familiar later practice of scheduling episodes for repeat viewing. The dated BBC examples establish that repeats existed before 1963; they do not identify the first rerun worldwide or establish when routine rerun scheduling began.
Television repeats predated Doctor Who
The BBC’s 1936 opening day
The Museum of Broadcast Communications’ overview of British programming describes a newsreel repeated later on the BBC’s opening day in 1936. That is an early documented repeat, but it does not prove it was television’s first repeat anywhere.
The BBC service’s 1946 return
After closing during the Second World War, BBC television resumed on 7 June 1946. Its opening programme was a repeat of the last programme transmitted before the shutdown: Disney’s Mickey’s Gala Premiere. This is a clear example of a repeat transmission more than 17 years before Doctor Who debuted.

What happened with Doctor Who in November 1963?
The BBC’s chronology dates the programme’s television debut to 23 November 1963. That establishes its debut date, not that it was the first rerun, and the chronology does not identify the broadcast as a separately transmitted “pilot.”
The claim that this episode was repeated because news coverage of John F. Kennedy’s assassination overshadowed it is not established by the cited records. The available evidence does not include a BBC schedule or programme log confirming a repeat the following week, or a contemporary BBC record giving that reason. It is safest to treat the causal story as unverified, not as a proven explanation of the broadcast schedule.
