The trailer people are usually looking for when they search this phrase is for Under African Skies, Joe Berlinger’s documentary about Paul Simon and the making and lasting influence of the album Graceland. The trailer was publicised in February 2012, so the film is not new and should not be described as upcoming. This page explains what the film covers, how to tell it apart from a second Simon documentary with a similar subject, and what to check before you look for a way to watch it.
Which film the trailer belongs to
The trailer matches Under African Skies. A blog post from February 2012 described it as a “brand new trailer” for the film and noted that Simon returns to South Africa 25 years after his first visit. That 2012 post is the only source identified for the trailer, so the date it gives is the best available anchor for the film’s release window.
What the documentary covers
The film follows Simon back to South Africa and looks at how Graceland was created and why it still matters. It also revisits the turbulence and controversy surrounding the album’s origins. The album was recorded in South Africa with local musicians, and it drew criticism at the time over the cultural boycott of apartheid-era South Africa. The film’s framing puts that dispute at the centre, alongside the album’s influence on later music.
The trailer description calls director Joe Berlinger an Academy Award-nominated filmmaker and a two-time Emmy and Peabody winner. Those credits come from the 2012 description and have not been checked against award records, so treat them as the trailer’s own claims.

Two Paul Simon documentaries, not one
A second film, Alex Gibney’s In Restless Dreams: The Music of Paul Simon, is easy to confuse with Under African Skies. Both involve Simon’s music, but they are different projects with different scopes.
| Point of comparison | Under African Skies | In Restless Dreams: The Music of Paul Simon |
|---|---|---|
| Director | Joe Berlinger (as stated in a 2012 trailer description) | Alex Gibney (as stated in search summaries) |
| Central subject | Simon’s return to South Africa and the making and influence of Graceland | A career-spanning portrait of Simon’s music |
| Other material covered | Controversy over the album’s origins | The making of Seven Psalms |
| Source of the description | February 2012 blog post about the trailer | Search summaries only; no primary page identified |
If you searched for a trailer about Graceland and South Africa, you want Under African Skies. If you want a broader account of Simon’s whole career, the Gibney film is the one to check separately.

Where to watch it now
Current availability has not been confirmed. The 2012 source does not say whether the film is streaming, broadcast, or sold as a physical disc, and no current distributor or retailer listing was identified. Before sending anyone to a platform, check the following:
- Search the film’s exact title, Under African Skies, together with “Joe Berlinger” on the streaming service you already use.
- Check the distributor’s website or a major retailer’s film listing for a current release, including any digital rental or purchase option.
- If a listing shows a different year or a different director, you have probably found the Gibney film or another title; compare the director name against the one given above.
- If you cannot find a current listing, the trailer and film may no longer be in circulation under this title, and the film’s availability should be treated as unresolved.
Why the 2012 date matters
The phrase “upcoming” in the search query reflects how the trailer was presented when it appeared. Since the trailer dates to 2012, a reader who arrives expecting a new release will find an older film. The useful framing is that this is a documentary about an album that is more than three decades old, and the trailer marks the film’s public launch rather than a future premiere.
