The ceremony was held at Constitution Hall on March 20, 2024, and the special premiered on PBS on April 8, 2024. Those are historical broadcast details, not confirmation that the performance is still available to stream.
Where to watch the performance
The performance was part of the PBS-broadcast Gershwin Prize special honoring Elton John and Bernie Taupin. The Library of Congress announced the April 8, 2024, PBS premiere, while contemporaneous coverage reported that the full show was available through PBS. Neither establishes present-day streaming availability, so check PBS’s current listings before searching for the special.
What happened at the tribute
The Library of Congress’s official set list includes Mitchell’s rendition of “I’m Still Standing.” Brandi Carlile introduced her, and Carlile and Annie Lennox supported her vocals. The Library describes Mitchell’s interpretation as a personal, bluesy statement of perseverance, transforming a high-energy John-Taupin song about surviving a romantic breakup.
Rolling Stone Canada reported that John and Taupin approved lyric changes to make the song fit Mitchell. In its account, Carlile said Mitchell had been “given the green light by Elton and Bernie to change some of the lyrics to fit her,” calling that “the most Joni Mitchell thing I think I’ve ever heard of.” This is Carlile’s wording as reproduced by the outlet, rather than a quotation independently confirmed against a transcript.

How Mitchell’s version differs from the original
Contemporary coverage describes Mitchell’s arrangement as slower and bluesy, with NME also characterizing it as jazzy. The vocal support from Carlile and Lennox adds another dimension to the performance. The reported approved lyric changes and the Library’s description of the song as a personal statement of perseverance further distinguish its interpretation from the original’s breakup-song setting.
For a comparison with John’s original, “I’m Still Standing” appeared on his 1983 album Too Low for Zero. That album is a companion for hearing the source recording; it is not the recording of Mitchell’s tribute performance. Current retail availability is not established.

Why the song fit the evening
The Library of Congress’s 2024 event account says John and Taupin’s songwriting partnership had lasted more than 50 years and attributes about 300 million combined record sales to them. The event program called the Gershwin Prize “the nation’s highest award for influence, impact and achievement in popular music.” Those figures and the award description provide context for the tribute, not measurements of Mitchell’s performance or its audience.
