What happened at Alice Tully Hall
The performance followed the September 28 premiere of Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere at the 63rd New York Film Festival. Springsteen appeared after the screening for a surprise, intimate rendition of the song, playing alone with one guitar. The studio report describes the audience standing during the performance but does not give an attendance figure.
The screening was the premiere of a film about the making of Springsteen’s 1982 album Nebraska. 20th Century Studios’ announcement places the event at Alice Tully Hall and describes the film’s focus on the album’s creation. Read the studio’s NYFF premiere announcement.

What Springsteen said about the song
In remarks reported by Sony Music Japan, Springsteen described the present as a period of “particularly dangerous times” and reflected on his years on the road as a musical ambassador for America. He said the country has often fallen short of its ideals, while remaining, for many people, “a land of hope and dreams, not of fear or divisiveness or government censorship or hatred.”
That contrast—between American reality and the promise people still see in the country—was the context he gave for the song. Read Sony Music Japan’s report.

How the performance connects to the film
Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere focuses on the making of Nebraska. The film is based on Warren Zanes’s book Deliver Me from Nowhere, identified as its source material in the studio and Sony Music Japan coverage. Zanes’s book is background to the film; it is not a recording of the NYFF performance.
