What happened onstage
Strings joined Dylan midway through Dylan’s set at the Outlaw Music Festival. Dylan was seated at the piano, and Strings played acoustic guitar. According to JamBase, Dylan had been performing a new arrangement of the song on that tour; Strings took several solos, and the two traded licks near the end. JamBase reports that Dylan said, “Thank you, Billy!” after the song.

Why the pairing caught attention
The performance brought together Dylan’s piano-led tour arrangement and Strings’ acoustic guitar playing, with the guest musician given room for multiple solos. The setting was a festival stop rather than a separately announced collaboration. iHeart also noted that Strings performs “All Along the Watchtower” at his own concerts.
