No. As of October 8, 2026, Jimmy Kimmel Live! is still listed by ABC, whose episode archive includes a program dated October 7. The apparent schedule shift traces to ABC’s temporary suspension of the show in September 2025, its return days later, and a brief period when some local ABC affiliates continued to preempt it. That was not the same as Kimmel being fired.
Is Jimmy Kimmel Live! still on ABC?
Yes. ABC’s current show page identifies Kimmel as host, and the network’s episode listing includes a program dated October 7, 2026. These are the latest direct indicators in the available record that the show remains active; they do not establish what ABC will decide after Kimmel’s current contract term.

What happened in September 2025?
The disruption began after Kimmel made a monologue about reactions to the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The sequence below distinguishes ABC’s national decision from local stations’ carriage choices.
September 17: ABC suspends the show
ABC suspended Jimmy Kimmel Live! indefinitely. The Associated Press reported the suspension and noted that ABC did not give a detailed reason in its statement. FCC Chairman Brendan Carr had made public comments in the surrounding period, but the reported sequence alone does not establish a definitive motive for ABC’s decision. AP’s report on the suspension

September 22–23: ABC announces a return
On September 22, ABC said it had held “thoughtful conversations with Jimmy” and decided to bring the program back the following day. In the statement reproduced by PBS NewsHour, ABC also said it believed some of Kimmel’s comments were “ill-timed and thus insensitive.” Those were ABC’s characterizations, not an independent finding. The show returned to ABC’s schedule on September 23. ABC’s reinstatement statement, reproduced by PBS NewsHour · AP on the return
September 23–26: Some local stations keep preempting it
Nationally, ABC had put the show back on its schedule. Separately, Nexstar, which owns local ABC affiliates, said its stations would continue to preempt the program. On September 26, Nexstar announced that it would return to those stations. The episode shows why a program appearing on the network schedule did not mean every local viewer could watch it on the usual affiliate at that moment. Was he fired, suspended, or removed from local stations?
These terms describe different things. ABC’s 2025 action was reported as an indefinite suspension, followed by a return; it was not a documented permanent termination. Nexstar’s decision concerned carriage on its own ABC-affiliated stations, not whether ABC itself had restored the show nationally. The best-supported answer to “Was Jimmy Kimmel just fired?” is no.

ABC announced a one-year contract extension on December 8, 2025. AP reported that the extension kept Kimmel on the air until at least May 2027. That gives a reported minimum horizon for his current deal; it does not settle whether the show or his role will continue after the term. AP’s report on the contract extension

In September 2026, ABC called reports of a future cancellation inaccurate and speculative, as quoted by Global News. That response is not an announcement of a later renewal. ABC’s active show page and October 7 episode listing provide the clearest current evidence that the program is still running. Global News quoting ABC
Quick Recap
What the “schedule shift” actually means
- Temporary suspension: ABC took the program off its schedule indefinitely in September 2025, then announced its return.
- Local preemptions: Some Nexstar-owned ABC affiliates continued not to carry it for several days after ABC’s national return announcement.
- Current status: ABC’s October 2026 episode archive lists a recent program, while reports about a future ending were described by ABC as speculative.
- Beyond May 2027: The one-year extension reported by AP does not answer whether Kimmel or the show will continue afterward.
