The episode explains Rachel’s operation as treatment for a deviated septum; an episode reference says the larger nose in her prom-video flashback was a production choice to make the characters’ pasts feel more realistic.
What happens in the episode?
In season 2’s “The One with the Prom Video,” an old prom recording shows a younger Rachel with a visibly larger nose. The episode centers on Rachel and Monica watching the video, which brings their high-school past into the story. TIME identifies the episode and its prom-video premise, and a transcript supports the flashback depiction.
Why does Rachel say she had an operation?
Within the show’s story, Rachel’s explanation is that she had an operation for a deviated septum. That is the character’s stated reason; it does not establish that the plot was drawn from Aniston’s biography.
What explains the larger nose in the flashback?
Friends Central’s episode reference reports that the enlarged nose was a production choice intended to make the characters’ earlier lives feel more real, and that Aniston wore a prosthetic nose for those scenes. This is a secondary episode reference, not a firsthand production interview.

The available evidence does not establish that Rachel’s nose-job storyline was inspired by Aniston. No directly attributable statement from a Friends creator, writer, or Aniston confirming that connection is present in the sources cited here. That absence is not proof that no such statement exists; it means the biographical link should be treated as unverified rather than fact.
