Hayes says they dated on and off through high school and college, spent a year apart, then reunited at a wedding rehearsal dinner. About six weeks later, he says, they were engaged. Several of his songs draw directly on that history.
How did Walker Hayes meet his wife Laney?
Hayes says he and Laney grew up in Mobile, attended the same school, and met in eleventh grade. He has described their early relationship as an on-and-off high-school romance: “my wife and I, we met in high school. And so we were on and off again like crazy.” Sony Music Nashville interview
That account is more precise than a 2019 Sony Music Canada description of the “Don’t Let Her” lyric video, which says it follows their relationship “from meeting in elementary school.” In a later first-person recollection, Hayes says they attended the same school but did not meet until eleventh grade. It is therefore more accurate to describe them as teenagers who grew up near one another, not as established childhood sweethearts. Sony Music Canada Hayes’s interview
From an on-and-off romance to a reunion
Hayes says he and Laney dated from eleventh grade until after college, with breaks along the way. They eventually took a year apart. He recalls seeing her again at a wedding rehearsal dinner; roughly six weeks after that reunion, they were engaged. The exact engagement date is not established in the available accounts. “Halloween”
Hayes describes “Halloween” as a love song about accepting the imperfect parts of a relationship and feeling free to be himself around Laney. Rather than presenting a polished romance, its premise centers on comfort with one another’s less-than-perfect sides. Sony Music Nashville’s song-by-song feature
“Don’t Let Her”
While touring in the UK and missing Laney and his family, Hayes made a list of specific things he admired about her. He said that list became the starting point for “Don’t Let Her,” which Sony described as a love-letter song. The label’s lyric-video description also frames it around their long relationship and family. Sony Music Canada

“You Broke Up With Me”
Hayes has linked the song’s relationship premise to the couple’s on-and-off high-school history, saying it was easy to relate to. But he also explained that the song’s main subject is his experience with the music business, so it should not be treated simply as a song about Laney. Sony Music Nashville interview
