The official WWE record does not show The Undertaker asking fans to choose between himself and Batista. It documents three separate 2007 moments that are easy to blur together: Undertaker picking Batista as his WrestleMania 23 opponent, fans voting on a guest referee for their Cyber Sunday match, and fans predicting how a steel-cage match would end. The specific scene the headline describes has not been verified against the archive, so this article separates what is documented from what is not.
Three different 2007 moments
Fan involvement in the Undertaker and Batista feud took three distinct forms in 2007. Each one has its own decision-maker, its own kind of audience input, and its own outcome, so they should not be treated as one event.
| Moment | Who made the call | Kind of fan input | Outcome | Official source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| WrestleMania 23 opponent | The Undertaker, after winning the 2007 Royal Rumble | None; the choice was Undertaker’s own | Undertaker chose Batista and went on to win the World Heavyweight Championship | WWE, “Decisions, decisions” |
| Cyber Sunday special guest referee | Fans, through a WWE online vote | Vote on which personality should referee | Batista defeated Undertaker, with Stone Cold Steve Austin as guest referee | WWE match record and WWE recap |
| Steel-cage match predictions | Fans, through comments WWE collected | Predictions of who would win | No result; predictions only | WWE fan reaction feature |
Undertaker’s choice for WrestleMania 23
The only moment in this group where Undertaker himself made the decision is the WrestleMania 23 opponent choice. WWE’s “Decisions, decisions” retrospective explains that the Royal Rumble winner could pick the championship opponent, and that Undertaker faced this choice on the road to WrestleMania 23. The page places Batista among the titleholders Undertaker could challenge. It is a description of the decision as WWE presented it at the time, not a record of fans being asked anything.
The WrestleMania 23 result
WWE’s match account for WrestleMania 23 records Undertaker defeating Batista to win the World Heavyweight Championship. The account describes Batista surviving a Tombstone Piledriver before the finish, and it describes a hard-fought bout. It is the official source for the match’s outcome, and it is the reason the rivalry carried into the rest of 2007.

The Cyber Sunday guest referee vote
The fan vote most often confused with the headline’s premise was held for the special guest referee in the Batista and Undertaker title match at Cyber Sunday in October 2007. Fans chose among three names:
- Steve Austin: 79 percent
- Mick Foley: 11 percent
- JBL: 10 percent
These percentages come from WWE’s own reporting on the poll, and they measure which referee fans preferred. They say nothing about whether fans preferred Undertaker or Batista. Austin then refereed the match, which Batista won. Mike McAvennie’s WWE recap, published October 29, 2007, covers both the vote and the match that followed.

The steel-cage predictions
After WWE announced a steel-cage match between the two, its website collected fan comments predicting how it would end. The feature quotes individual predictions from both Undertaker and Batista supporters. It is a set of selected comments, not a survey, so it cannot tell you what proportion of the audience backed either wrestler. The same caution applies to any reading of these comments as a measure of overall preference.
The Kansas City crowd
WWE’s October 25, 2007 preview of the Cyber Sunday build describes a Kansas City audience giving competitive cheers for both “Batista” and “Undertaker.” The same preview characterizes the response to Batista’s spear as mixed. That is a credible description of one crowd on one night. It does not establish how viewers generally felt about either wrestler.

What the record does not establish
- No WWE archive page located for this article shows Undertaker asking fans to choose between himself and Batista.
- No official poll measures overall fan preference between the two wrestlers.
- No verbatim statement from a named person, made to the crowd, that matches the headline’s wording has been established.
- No video clip matching the headline’s description has been verified.
If you are trying to confirm a specific clip, check it against the official record in this order:
- Identify the show and date from the clip’s on-screen graphics or upload description, and match it to WWE’s 2007 archive.
- Determine whether the segment is a vote, a prediction request, or Undertaker’s own decision. Each one maps to a different page in the table above.
- Compare any stated result with the WWE match record before accepting it.
A clip that asks viewers to choose between Undertaker and Batista for a match decision would be a new finding relative to the sources above, so it should be verified against WWE’s archive before being described as official.
