It was the final stop on the production’s 2024 Western Australian tour, not a forthcoming event.
What happened in Mandurah
The 60-minute performance paired Zero Emcee—rapper Jaydan Ahmat—with WAYJO’s 18-piece band. The orchestra played arrangements of Ahmat’s music by WAYJO artistic director Mace Francis. The Mandurah event listing advised parental guidance because some songs contain mature themes. Mandurah Performing Arts Centre’s event listing
How jazz and hip-hop came together
CircuitWest described the program as a musical journey through jazz’s influence and lineage into hip-hop. It moved between historic jazz selections and Zero Emcee’s original music, drawing attention to elements the styles can share: improvisation and freestyle, melody, rhythms and grooves, and call-and-response. Rather than treating the genres as opposites, the production made those connections part of the performance. CircuitWest
Zero Emcee put the connection in practical terms: “They both make you move your feet; you can really see the similarity when hip-hop producers use jazz in their beats.” Francis described the big band as a fitting ensemble for the rapper’s presence and lyrics. Mandurah Times, 7 August 2024
