The anime tells these events in chronological order. The manga opens with a sixteen-year-old Thorfinn and returns to his childhood later.

Stage by stage
Childhood in Iceland
Thorfinn is introduced as a curious, adventure-seeking boy in Iceland. According to the official character profile, he hears about Vinland from his father Thors and from the adventurer Leif Erikson, and he wants to reach it himself. His admiration for warriors and weapons sets up the central conflict of the early story: the life he imagines against the values his father tries to teach him.

Thors’s death and life with the mercenaries
Thorfinn leaves Iceland on his first voyage with Thors. After losing his protector, he lives among mercenaries in a rough life of looting and war. The official profile describes him as small and agile, and says he fights with daggers. In an official interview, the staff explain that the anime added childhood material in episodes 5 and 6 to show how he grew into this life.
Askeladd’s band and the revenge quest
Thorfinn serves in Askeladd’s band and seeks a duel with Askeladd to avenge his father. In the anime, the Frankish fortress sequence comes after the childhood material. In the manga, the same fortress episode is the opening story, and Thorfinn is already sixteen there. The author and staff say the manga then goes back to his childhood.

Makoto Yukimura, the manga’s author, explained the choice in an official anime-site interview:
“I wrote about Thorfinn’s childhood after that, but since I’d started out by showing him at sixteen, it meant that no matter how much danger he fell into, the readers knew he would survive. That’s an issue with telling a story out of chronological order.”

The reviewed sources do not give Thorfinn’s age for each arc. The only age stated is sixteen, for the manga’s opening story.
Askeladd’s death and the farm in southern Jutland
According to the official anime synopsis, Askeladd’s death leaves Thorfinn without a purpose. He is bought as a slave by the landowner Ketil and works on Ketil’s farm in southern Jutland, Denmark. There he meets Einar, who is also enslaved. The synopsis presents this meeting as the start of Thorfinn confronting his past and finding meaning again. The English synopsis places this section at the beginning of a new millennium but gives no exact year.

The Vinland project
Kodansha’s publisher synopsis identifies Thorfinn’s dream of a westward land without war or slavery as the motivation that carries the later story, and names that land Vinland. The reviewed official pages do not provide a complete list of manga events or an exact date sequence for this later phase, so the sections of the manga covering it should be checked directly against the volumes.

Only the farm arc has any date reference in the official material, and that reference is broad. A fan-maintained timeline lists 13 November 1002 for an early event and spring 1022 for Thorfinn’s group departing for Vinland. Those figures could not be checked against the original text, so treat them as unconfirmed. Any precise year or date for a manga event should be verified in the chapters before it is repeated.

Reading the manga in order
The publisher lists the manga as complete, with print and digital editions and a Deluxe Edition. Its catalog page does not establish that a single volume contains the whole story. Retail stock and prices were not checked.
