Grant’s 2024 civil complaint makes serious allegations against McMahon, WWE and former executive John Laurinaitis; a separate 2025 Securities and Exchange Commission action concerned undisclosed agreements and financial reporting, not a determination that sexual abuse occurred.
Here is what the documented record says, what each legal proceeding addressed, and where the evidence stops.
What Janel Grant alleged
Janel Grant, a former WWE employee, filed a federal lawsuit in Connecticut on January 25, 2024, naming McMahon, WWE and former WWE executive John Laurinaitis. Her complaint alleges sexual abuse, assault, trafficking, coercion and related conduct during her employment. Grant sought monetary damages and asked the court to void a nondisclosure agreement.
Those are allegations in a civil complaint, not findings by a court that the alleged conduct occurred. The complaint contains graphic detail; the central point for understanding the case is that Grant alleges McMahon, Laurinaitis and WWE were responsible for serious misconduct and related harms.

What the SEC found—and what it did not
The SEC’s January 10, 2025 announcement concerns corporate disclosure and accounting. It is a separate legal track from Grant’s civil claims. The SEC said McMahon failed to disclose two agreements he signed in 2019 and 2022 to WWE’s board, legal department, accounting staff, financial reporting personnel and auditor. The SEC order found that the nondisclosure circumvented WWE’s internal accounting controls and caused material misstatements in financial statements.

The SEC said the payments were in exchange for nondisclosure and releases of potential claims. Its announcement described the counterparties as a former employee and a former independent contractor, but did not identify them as Grant. It would therefore be unsupported to say, on the basis of that release, that either agreement was with her.

McMahon consented to the SEC order without admitting or denying its findings. He agreed to a $400,000 civil penalty and to reimburse WWE $1,330,915.90 under Section 304(a) of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act. The SEC action was a settled enforcement matter, not a criminal prosecution and not a court judgment on Grant’s allegations.

How the legal proceedings differ

The SEC’s findings cannot be used as proof that Grant’s allegations occurred. Nor does the fact that both matters involve agreements and potential claims make them the same case: they concern different questions and have different procedural postures.
What was reported about the case’s procedural status
A TKO filing dated May 30, 2025 reported that Laurinaitis had been dismissed from the matter with prejudice by stipulation. The same filing described WWE’s motion to compel arbitration as pending. That is the status reported in that filing, not confirmation of the case’s current docket or a ruling on the merits of Grant’s claims.

The filing of Grant’s complaint, the existence of a federal investigation, or corporate departures connected to the matter should not be mistaken for a court’s determination that the alleged conduct happened. The available record here does not establish the outcome of any later court proceedings or investigation.

A 2024 retrospective by TIME places Grant’s case in the context of earlier controversies and refers to former referee Rita Chatterton’s rape allegation against McMahon. TIME also reports that McMahon denied the allegation. That retrospective account is not a court finding or a primary-source record establishing the allegation as fact.

The available documented material supports noting Chatterton’s allegation and McMahon’s denial, but not a detailed chronology of every earlier allegation or a claim that the cases form one proven pattern. The incidents and claims should be assessed individually and attributed to the people or sources that reported them.
