Tron: Ares is worth watching if you come for the spectacle and the music. Its visuals and Nine Inch Nails score are the strongest parts of the film, and the reviews we examined agree on that much. The weaker part is the story. Several critics found the AI premise introduced more than it is explored, and the emotional arc of its lead character less convincing than the film intends.
What the film is
Tron: Ares is a Disney film directed by Joachim Rønning. Disney’s official film page lists a 119-minute runtime, a PG-13 rating, and an October 10, 2025 theatrical release. The screenplay is credited to Jesse Wigutow, and the story to David DiGilio and Wigutow, according to Walt Disney Studios production notes dated September 17, 2025.
The premise is that Ares, described in Disney’s synopsis as a highly sophisticated Program, is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission. Disney calls this humanity’s first encounter with AI beings. Ares meets Eve Kim, an ENCOM CEO and technologist who is seeking a critical code written by Kevin Flynn. The two are pursued while the film considers how technology and humanity might intersect. The production notes name identity, humanity, and purpose as the story’s central concerns.
The cast includes Jared Leto, Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan, Gillian Anderson, and Jeff Bridges.

Is it a soft reboot?
The headline calls Tron: Ares a soft reboot, and that label is a fair description of the framing rather than a settled fact. The film continues the franchise’s world. It keeps the ENCOM company, the Flynn code thread, and the idea of a digital realm, which connects it to Tron (1982) and Tron: Legacy (2010). What changes is the setting. The action leaves the Grid and moves into the real world, and the story’s question shifts from a program’s place in a computer to what an AI being is, and what it would mean for it to be human. Whether that amounts to a reboot or a continuation with a new direction is a matter of how strictly you define the term.
What critics agree on, and where they split
Three reviews are cited here: The Associated Press (October 2025), TechRadar (October 7, 2025), and The Atlantic (October 10, 2025). They are a small sample and do not represent a measured consensus. The table below compares how each addresses four dimensions that matter most to viewers.

| Dimension | The Associated Press | TechRadar | The Atlantic |
|---|---|---|---|
| Visual design and action | Praises the action | Likes the technological ambition; the action moves into the real world | Acknowledges the glowing visual design |
| Story coherence and pacing | Describes the plot as a corporate race around the AI barrier; criticism not stated | Criticizes some dialogue | Says the AI premise remains underdeveloped and leaves unanswered questions about the imagined science |
| Performance and character | Praises Greta Lee’s performance | Criticizes the handling of Eve and Ares’ relationship | Says Jared Leto’s performance does not match the protagonist’s self-awareness arc |
| Score | Praises the music | Describes an industrial electronic score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, alongside Nine Inch Nails music | Praises the Nine Inch Nails score |
| Overall rating | Three out of four stars | Not stated | Not stated |
The pattern is consistent across the three reviews. The film’s look and sound earn praise, while the story and character work draw the criticism. The Atlantic makes the sharpest version of that argument, but it still credits the film’s design and score.
The director’s stated intent
In a Walt Disney Company article dated October 9, 2025, Rønning described the film’s core this way: “For me, it’s the human factor and it’s about Ares and his journey and discovering what it means and what it takes to be human,” Rønning explained. “That’s the heart of the film.” Read against the reviews, this explains the film’s ambition. The film wants its emotional weight to come from Ares’ journey, which is exactly the element critics said did not land fully.

Production scale
The Walt Disney Company reports that the film used about 2,000 VFX shots, attributed to Rønning’s account of production. This is a studio-reported figure and has not been independently audited. Disney’s account also describes hybrid effects combining practical and digital work. The number explains why the visuals feel so dense, but it does not in itself show that the effects succeed.
Box office context
A Comscore estimate reported by The Associated Press on October 12, 2025 put the opening-weekend domestic box office at $33.5 million. That figure is a dated estimate as of Sunday, October 12, and is not a final gross.

Who should watch it
- Watch it on the biggest screen you can if the visuals and sound are your main reason to see a franchise film. The reviews agree that these are its strongest assets.
- Go in expecting the story to be a secondary pleasure. If you need the AI premise to be fully developed, the critics’ concerns are the ones to weigh.
- Pay attention to the Ares and Eve relationship if character drama matters to you, since two of the three reviews addressed it critically.
The film’s central question is the one Rønning names: what it means to be human. Viewers should decide for themselves whether the film’s answer, and the way it gets there, is enough to carry the spectacle.
