Futurism’s report on the episode, dated Dec. 12, 2022, describes an appearance of about five minutes during which the heckling continued. The moment spread as a short video clip, and the crowd-size and crowd-reaction claims around it come from attributed accounts rather than from any measured count.
What the report says happened
The account comes from a Futurism article by Victor Tangermann, dated Dec. 12, 2022. It is a report on a single evening, not a continuing news story, and the details below are the article’s own descriptions unless noted otherwise.
- Setting and date: a Dave Chappelle show in San Francisco on Sunday night, Dec. 11, 2022.
- Introduction: Chappelle introduced Musk as the “richest man in the world.” Boos and jeers followed.
- Duration: Musk’s time on stage is described as roughly five minutes, with heckling continuing throughout.
- Chappelle’s response to the crowd: “Sounds like some of the people you fired are in the audience.”
- Musk’s words on stage: “You weren’t expecting this,” and “I’m rich, bitch!”
The report embeds a YouTube clip of the appearance. Its visual account, including how the crowd looked and sounded, is therefore something a reader can check directly; the article’s wording about the crowd’s size and mood is a description, not a measurement.
Two competing accounts of the crowd
The article sets two characterizations of the crowd side by side. They come from different people with different vantage points, and neither is a measured result.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Claim | Who made it | Basis as described | Evidentiary status |
|---|---|---|---|
| “A good 80 percent of the stadium boos” | An attendee, quoted by Futurism | The attendee’s own estimate of the crowd | An estimate. Not a survey or official count. |
| “technically, it was 90 percent cheers and ten percent boos (except during quiet periods)” | Elon Musk, in a later post quoted by Futurism | Musk’s own characterization of the crowd | A self-reported characterization. Not independently measured. |
The two numbers cannot both be treated as fact, and neither can be stated as the true share of the audience that booed. Readers should attribute each figure to its speaker, as the article does.
What is and is not established
The reporting is the available source for the setting, the sequence of events, and the quoted words. Several things sit outside what it establishes:

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Attendance: no total attendance figure is given, and the article calls the crowd large without quantifying it.
- Booing share: no measured percentage of people booing is reported. The 80 and 90 percent figures are estimates and characterizations, as described above.
- Footage provenance: the article says the original Twitter account that first shared a clip was deleted, and that a clip later resurfaced on YouTube. Whether the embedded YouTube video is the same footage as the earlier posts is not something the reporting independently confirms.
- Motives: Futurism connects the response to Musk’s public controversies and his social-media activity. That is the reporter’s interpretation and surrounding context. It is not an established explanation of why audience members booed.
What “wilting” means in the headline
The headline’s word “wilting” is Futurism’s characterization of how Musk appeared on stage. It is not a clinical term, and it does not describe a measurable condition. Readers who want to judge the moment for themselves should watch the clip and form their own view of Musk’s demeanor, rather than treating the headline’s word as a finding.

- Identify who uploaded the version you are watching, and whether that account is the original poster or a re-upload.
- Compare the clip’s length with the roughly five-minute appearance described in the report. A much shorter clip may be an edit that omits quiet or contested stretches.
- Look for the time stamps, camera angle, and audience sound across the whole appearance, not only the loudest moments.
- When a percentage appears in a caption or post, ask who measured it and how. A personal estimate and a self-reported characterization are not the same kind of evidence as a counted or surveyed result.
On this specific episode, the reporting supports the sequence and the attributed quotations. It does not supply a crowd count, and it does not settle how much of the audience was booing.
