Village People accepted an invitation to participate in Donald Trump’s 2025 inaugural activities, announcing the decision on January 13. The group was scheduled to appear at a rally and two inaugural balls; reporting confirmed its performance at the January 19 rally, where Trump sang and briefly danced to “Y.M.C.A.”

What were Village People doing for Trump’s inauguration?

On January 13, 2025, Village People said it had accepted an invitation from Trump’s campaign to participate in inaugural activities, including at least one event with the president-elect. The Associated Press reported that the group was set to perform at a rally and an inaugural ball. The AP’s January 13 report covered the announcement.

Which appearances were scheduled, and what was reported to have happened?

A January 19 preview in The Washington Post listed three scheduled appearances. A separate Associated Press report described the rally performance that day. The schedule and the reported rally appearance are not the same kind of evidence: the preview lists plans, while the AP report confirms the group took the stage at the rally.

Why did the group agree to perform?

Village People framed its decision as an effort to keep music separate from politics and to offer a unifying song. Those were the group’s stated hopes, not evidence that the performance brought people together.

In a statement reproduced by ABC News, the group said: “We know this won’t make some of you happy to hear however we believe that music is to be performed without regard to politics.” ABC News reported the group’s explanation on January 14.

The Associated Press reproduced another part of the statement: “Our song Y.M.C.A. is a global anthem that hopefully helps bring the country together after a tumultuous and divided campaign where our preferred candidate lost.” The group also said: “Therefore, we believe it’s now time to bring the country together with music which is why VILLAGE PEOPLE will be performing at various events as part of the 2025 Inauguration of Donald J. Trump.” The AP’s January 13 report reproduced those remarks.

Why was “Y.M.C.A.” central to the moment?

The AP described “Y.M.C.A.” as Village People’s best-known hit and reported that it had become a staple at Trump rallies during the 2024 campaign. That context helps explain why the song was familiar at the rally, but it does not change the distinction between the group’s stated rationale and the political meaning audiences may attach to its choice to perform.
