Joey King plays Halina Kurc and Logan Lerman plays Addy Kurc in Hulu’s limited series We Were the Lucky Ones (2024). Hadas Yaron, Henry Lloyd-Hughes, and Amit Rahav play their siblings Mila, Genek, and Jakob, and Lior Ashkenazi and Robin Weigert play the parents, Sol and Nechuma. The series adapts Georgia Hunter’s novel, which is inspired by her family’s story. It follows one Jewish family separated at the start of World War II and determined to survive and reunite. It is a dramatized adaptation, not a documentary record, so the sections on the real family are kept separate from the screen characters.

Halina Kurc (Joey King)
Halina is the youngest daughter. She is drawn to Adam, the architect who lodges with the family, and she becomes increasingly active in efforts to protect her relatives. Her storyline is the one most tied to the romance with Adam, which makes her the family member most often placed next to the circle outside the household.
Addy Kurc (Logan Lerman)
Addy is the son who is living in Paris when the war begins. In the series’ opening context he is a composer. His journey as a refugee, seeking a country that would admit him and his family, is the thread that Lerman later connected to his own family history (see the section on the real family below).
Mila Kurc (Hadas Yaron)
Mila is the daughter married to Selim, and she is expecting a child at the start of the story. Her pregnancy frames her early scenes and shapes the choices her family makes around her.

Genek Kurc (Henry Lloyd-Hughes)
Genek is the eldest sibling. He is his father’s protégé and confidant, so he is the child whose position in the family is closest to Sol’s.

Sol is the father of the five siblings. He is a mentor to Genek, and his decisions about the family’s movements and safety shape the separation the series is built on.

Nechuma Kurc (Robin Weigert)
Nechuma is the mother of the siblings. She is one of the two parents the children are separated from and hope to reunite with.

Selim is Mila’s husband. His role is tied to her pregnancy and to the family’s decisions during the early years of the war.

Adam Eichenwald (Sam Woolf)
Adam is the architect lodger. His romance with Halina gives the family’s private life a counterweight to the danger outside.
Bella Tatar (Eva Feiler)
Bella is Jakob’s girlfriend. She is the main link between Jakob and the life he has away from his parents and siblings.
Herta Seifert (Moran Rosenblatt)
Moran Rosenblatt is credited as Herta Seifert in the official cast listing. Published character detail for this role is limited, so the episodes are the best reference for her place in the story.

The real family and the novel
The series is based on Georgia Hunter’s novel, We Were the Lucky Ones, which draws on her family’s history. The screen characters are dramatized and constructed for the story. They are not one-to-one copies of documented individuals, and the series does not reproduce every historical event exactly.
TIME reports that Hunter first learned about her grandfather Addy’s survivor history through a high-school family-history assignment, and that she later researched the experiences of other relatives. That origin explains why the novel and series read as family-inspired history rather than archival record.
Lerman has described the connection from his side. The Associated Press quoted him as saying: “My grandfather was a refugee with his family,” said Lerman. “He fled Germany in the late 1930s and ended up on this long journey similar to my character. He ended up in Shanghai with his parents and sister because I guess it was one of the countries that was letting Jews in at the time. Addy also had a long journey as a refugee, seeking a country that would let them in.”
For wider context, the Associated Press reported in an April 5, 2024 feature that the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany estimated about 245,000 Holocaust survivors were living across more than 90 countries. That is a 2024 estimate, not a current count, and it describes survivors generally rather than the series.

To read the source material, look for Georgia Hunter’s novel of the same title. It is the book the series adapts, and it offers more of the family background than the screen version can cover.
