Dr Suzie Edge’s family-tree video, covered by PerthNow in an article by Rachel Fenner published 24 October 2023, shows that King Charles III’s ancestry repeatedly loops back on itself. The same ancestors appear on both his mother’s and his father’s sides, most prominently Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. The coverage does not calculate an inbreeding coefficient for Charles III, and it does not establish any health condition from the family tree.
What the video depicts
The video starts with Charles III, his parents Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, and Elizabeth’s forebears George VI, George V and Edward VII. From Edward VII it follows the line back to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Philip’s ancestry is then traced in parallel, and it reaches the same couple by a different route.
Elizabeth II’s line
- Charles III to Elizabeth II, then George VI and George V.
- George V to Edward VII, and Edward VII to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.
Prince Philip’s line
- Philip to his parents, Prince Andrew of Greece and Princess Alice of Battenberg.
- Princess Alice to her mother, Victoria of Hesse, and then to Victoria’s mother, Alice, a daughter of Victoria and Albert.
- Andrew’s father, George I of Greece and Denmark, leads to Christian IX of Denmark, whose daughter Alexandra married Edward VII. The loop back to the same royal household is what makes the pedigree look circular.
Those are the lineage links as PerthNow describes them. The coverage presents them as the video’s content; it does not show that each link was checked against primary civil or church records.
What the overlap does and does not establish
A family tree in which one ancestor appears through several branches demonstrates genealogical overlap. That is a fact about the pedigree’s shape. It is not, on its own, a measurement of how closely related the parents were, and it is not evidence of any health outcome.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Many royal households married within a small set of European families, so overlapping branches are common in such pedigrees. The video’s visual point is that the overlap is dense and recurring, which is a reasonable description of the chart. Turning that description into a statement about Charles III’s health would require a separate calculation and medical assessment, and neither appears in the coverage.
What an inbreeding coefficient measures
An inbreeding coefficient is a defined calculation based on a pedigree or on genetic data. The Royal Kennel Club’s guidance on its inbreeding calculators gives the standard explanation: the coefficient is the probability that two copies of a gene variant in an individual were inherited from an ancestor common to both parents. The same guidance says the coefficient is a measure of risk, not a direct measure or guarantee of health.
That guidance is written for dogs. It is useful for the definition, but its thresholds and examples do not transfer to people, and it says nothing about Charles III.

The Charles II of Spain comparison
PerthNow contrasts Charles III with Charles II of Spain and attributes Charles II’s physical and mental disabilities to inbreeding. That is the coverage’s characterization, and it should be read as such. The most detailed figure in the comparison comes from a peer-reviewed study of the Spanish Habsburgs.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Gonzalo Álvarez and colleagues, in a 2009 paper in PLOS ONE titled “The role of inbreeding in the extinction of a European royal dynasty,” built an extended pedigree up to 16 generations deep, involving more than 3,000 individuals. They reported a coefficient of 0.254 for Charles II and a rise across the dynasty from 0.025 for Philip I.
| Item | Charles III (United Kingdom) | Charles II (Spain) |
|---|---|---|
| Source | PerthNow, 24 October 2023, reporting on Dr Suzie Edge’s video | Álvarez et al., PLOS ONE, 2009 |
| Evidence type | Family-tree depiction of repeated ancestors | Computed inbreeding coefficient from an extended pedigree |
| Pedigree depth and size | Not stated in the coverage | Up to 16 generations; more than 3,000 individuals |
| Inbreeding coefficient | Not stated; no numerical coefficient is given | 0.254, as reported in the 2009 study |
| Health claim | None established from the video | Attributed to inbreeding by PerthNow, not a diagnosis drawn from the 2009 study |
The two figures should not be placed side by side as if they measured the same thing. One is a computed coefficient for a historical Spanish king; the other is a visual reading of a family tree for a living British monarch.

Claims in the coverage to treat with caution
The coverage includes several peripheral claims, including cousin relationships involving other members of the royal family and a claim about Prince Harry and Meghan attributed to a Daily Mail investigation. Those were not independently verified and are not repeated here.
The coverage also names Mortal Monarchs as a book by Dr Suzie Edge. The coverage does not establish that the book covers this video or Charles III’s pedigree, so it should not be read as the video’s source. It may still be useful background on royal dynastic history for readers who want more context.
The headline and the “family wreath”
The article’s headline asks “how inbred King Charles III is,” and the coverage describes the family tree as looking “more like a family wreath.” Both are publisher framings. The wording makes for a vivid headline, but neither phrase is a scientific measurement. The defensible reading is narrower: the video shows repeated ancestry in Charles III’s pedigree, and it does not show how inbred he is in any measurable sense.

No direct statement by Dr Edge or another named expert about the video’s method or conclusions appears in the coverage, so no quotation from them is offered here.
For readers who want to check the chart themselves, the lineage links above can be followed in standard peerage and royal genealogy references. Any claim that a given relationship produces a particular inbreeding figure requires a calculation based on that pedigree, which the video does not present.
Dr Edge’s video is a 2023 publication, and coverage of it dates from that period. This article describes the video as reported in that coverage.
