The cause was reported as cancer, based on statements from her husband and publicist. The Washington Post attributed the information to a statement from Kell, while AP cited her publicist. Neither report identified a cancer type or provided further medical details.
Kell said in a statement reported by AP: “I have lost the love of my life, and America has lost one of its most endearing actresses. She will be missed.” Mahaffey and Kell’s daughter, Alice Richards, also survived her.
