After posting an underwear photo on Instagram in December 2024, Valerie Bertinelli answered people criticizing her body, the photo, and her reason for sharing it. She urged them to show themselves the same compassion they might deny others.
What Valerie Bertinelli said in December 2024
Salon reported on December 4, 2024, that Bertinelli posted an underwear photo to Instagram and then addressed the criticism it drew. Her message spoke to people judging both her appearance and her choice to post the image.
Salon reproduced her words: “To all of you who sit in judgment of my body, the photo, and my reason for posting it, I hope you find a place in your heart to not judge yourself as harshly as you judge others.” The appeal turned the focus from defending the image to questioning the harshness behind the judgment. Salon’s December 2024 report attributes that wording to her Instagram message.
How the 2024 post differs from her 2021 response
Bertinelli had addressed body shaming in a separate incident in July 2021, after a follower told her she needed to lose weight. ABC News reported that she became emotional in an Instagram video and said, “If I could lose the weight and keep it off, I would.” She added, “But since I haven’t been successful with that my whole entire life at 61, I’m still dealing with it. You think I’m not tired of it, lady? Where’s the compassion?” Her caption asked, “Aren’t we tired of body shaming women yet?!”

What the coverage establishes—and what it does not
The December 2024 reporting establishes that Bertinelli shared an underwear photo, responded to people judging her body and her reason for posting it, and asked them to consider how harshly they judge themselves. It does not establish that the post promoted a book or another product. The reports describe these individual exchanges; they do not provide a population statistic about body shaming.

Bertinelli has written about self-acceptance elsewhere. AARP identifies Enough Already: Learning to Love the Way I Am Today as one of her books, and Getting Naked: The Quiet Work of Becoming Perfectly Imperfect is identified as her memoir in 2026 coverage.
