The Video Game History Foundation’s (VGHF) Digital Archive is a free online research library for video game history—not a site for playing old games. It launched in early access on January 30, 2025, with more than 1,500 searchable out-of-print magazines and a reported 30,000-plus historic files. VGHF later reported that its archive had passed 5,000 magazines, so the launch figures are historical rather than a current inventory count.
What is in the VGHF Digital Archive?
The archive brings together digitized video game history materials, including magazines, development and production documents, artwork, press kits, promotional materials, event guides, catalogs, and other ephemera. Its public digital materials are free to access without special credentials, according to VGHF’s launch announcement.
At launch, VGHF said the library contained more than 1,500 full-text-searchable, out-of-print magazines. Ars Technica reported more than 30,000 indexed and curated files, including over 100 hours of raw production files from the creation of the Myst series and Sonic the Hedgehog concept art and design files contributed by artist Tom Payne. Those file-count and example details describe launch-era reporting, not a confirmed current total.
VGHF later reported that its digital archive had passed 5,000 magazines. That is a later growth milestone; the current total number of files is not established by the cited figures.

How to search the archive
Use the Digital Archive portal to search across available full text or browse its collections. A full-text search can help surface mentions across digitized material; browsing collections is useful when you want to explore materials grouped by collection rather than search for a particular phrase.
The portal describes the library as “a permanent work in progress.” Not every VGHF holding has been cataloged or digitized. For a broader view, consult the separate Library Catalog, which can include material that is not yet online as well as unprocessed holdings. Finding an item in the broader catalog does not mean its digital copy is available.

What the archive does—and does not—let you do
Research historical materials online
The digital library is intended for research into video game history. Public digital items can be viewed free of charge; VGHF librarian Phil Salvador wrote, “Anyone studying video game history is a researcher, and we do not charge to view publicly accessible materials.” The launch announcement says staff-mediated access to original or unprocessed materials may be available as a paid service at VGHF’s discretion. That is separate from ordinary access to public digital items.
Do not expect playable games
The archive is not a playable library of out-of-print games. VGHF says it generally does not collect retail games and did not plan to provide researchers with playable games, citing U.S. copyright restrictions on digital access to out-of-print games. The collection focuses on historical research materials rather than game access.

Check rights before reusing anything
Being able to view a scan or file online does not automatically grant permission to republish it. VGHF says it generally does not own the intellectual property in collection materials and cannot grant express reproduction permission unless a collection states otherwise. Some special collections may include donor permission for research reproduction. Before using an image, document, or other item in an article, video, or other publication, review the individual collection information and the portal’s researcher agreement, which directs users to use materials for research or private study.
