The most useful everyday answer is premium seats, or premium tickets. That is the label ticket sellers use for the top-priced tier in most houses. “Box” and “loge” are different kinds of answer. They describe where a seat sits and how it is arranged, and they do not reliably mean the most expensive seat. Which seats sit at the top of the price scale depends on the venue and the performance, so the label alone never settles the question.
Premium: the broad term for the top-priced tier
Broadway.com’s FAQ defines the term directly: “Premium tickets are the highest-priced tickets, offering the most desirable seat locations and best views in the theater.” The same source says premium tickets are typically in the center Orchestra and Front Mezzanine. In practice, that means the most expensive seats are not always the closest to the stage. A central row in the front mezzanine can cost more than a side seat in the orchestra.
When a reader asks what the costliest seats are called, “premium” is the answer that works across most venues. It names a price tier rather than a physical shape of seat, which is why it travels better than the other terms.
Box and loge: seating arrangements, not price ranks
Box seats
A box is an enclosed or partly enclosed group of seats set apart from the main rows. Boxes can carry a high price, but the sources do not establish that they are always the priciest seats in a house. Three examples show how the term varies:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Broadway.com says box seats in Broadway theatres are considered restricted-view seating and are often not sold. A box label there is a warning about sightlines as much as a mark of status.
- The Metropolitan Opera’s seating-zone guide lists Parterre Side Box Front and Grand Tier Box Rear as box locations, separate from the named price zones Orchestra Premium and Orchestra Prime. At that house, “box” identifies a location, and “premium” identifies a price zone.
- The Saenger Theatre’s official ticketing page describes box seating at the front of the balcony and lists features such as plush seats and tables. That is an enhanced product at that venue. It is not a rule for theatres in general.
Loge seats
Loge is a seating term that the sources reviewed do not define in a standard way. Treat it as a venue-specific label. In many houses it refers to a row or group of seats in a balcony or upper level that may be partly separated from the rest, but the exact meaning, position and price should be confirmed on that venue’s own seat map.
How the labels compare
The table below lists each label with the venue example that supports it. Where a source gives no price ranking for a term, the cell says so rather than guessing.

Why there is no universal name for the top tier
The “premium” definition above comes from one ticketing publisher, not from an industry standard. The sources reviewed include no statement from a regulator, standards body, court or named industry figure that fixes one name for the most expensive seats in every theatre. Venues choose their own zone names, and those names change from house to house.
No published figure establishes how much more premium seats cost than other seats, or how often boxes are sold. Any price comparison has to come from the specific venue and performance.

How to find the real top tier for a performance
- Open the venue’s own ticketing page, then select the exact performance date. A general venue page may show older or different pricing.
- Find the seat map and its price legend. Note which colour or section carries the highest per-seat price for that date.
- Read the section name and its position on the map. Check whether the top-priced section is central orchestra, front mezzanine, or a box.
- For any box or side seat, look for restricted-view or sightline notes before you buy.
- If a box lists amenities such as tables, compare them against the per-seat price rather than assuming the extras justify the cost.
- Confirm availability. Some boxes are not offered for sale for a given show.
Use this checklist to compare the labels on the map you are actually shown. The name on the seat tells you less than the price and position listed for your date.

What to remember when reading seat labels
- “Premium” names the top price tier and is the safest general answer.
- “Box” and “loge” describe arrangements that may be expensive, restricted, or both.
- Venue zone names differ, and their price ranks must be read from that venue’s own map.
