The sequel is real, but the available announcements do not establish that the ending directly announced it or that the original characters will return.
What happens in the leaked new ending?
Reports published on October 3, 2024, described two post-credits scenes in the remake. These details come from leaked footage, not an official explanation of the scenes’ purpose.

Josh survives, still haunted
GameSpot reported that Josh appears in a third possible fate: badly injured after an encounter with a creature, but still human. Dr. Hill’s voice continues to haunt him, leaving open the possibility that Josh could redeem himself. GameSpot’s October 3, 2024 report describes the scene.
Sam faces a new mystery
The same report describes Sam years later, apparently self-medicating for PTSD. A book about creature myths lies by her bed; after she wakes with a fresh wound, an eerie voice is heard. Push Square’s contemporaneous account places Sam in Los Angeles and likewise describes her waking to a mysterious wound and voice. Push Square’s October 3, 2024 report also cautioned that the leaked clip did not confirm a sequel.

Did the ending tease a sequel?
It was reasonable to read the scenes as sequel teases: Josh’s survival and Sam’s unexplained wound both leave their stories unsettled, while the creature-myth book points toward further supernatural trouble. But the footage did not establish that either character would lead a continuation, and no official creator explanation in the available coverage said the scenes were designed to announce a sequel.
The distinction matters now: a sequel has since been officially announced, but that does not prove the leaked ending was its direct setup. PlayStation’s announcement describes a standalone story with a brand-new cast and world, rather than confirming a continuation of Josh and Sam’s stories.

What PlayStation has confirmed about Until Dawn 2
In its official announcement, PlayStation said Until Dawn 2 is coming to PS5 in 2027. Firesprite Creative Director Stu Tilley described it as “a standalone experience, featuring a brand new cast, a whole new world to explore, and true to form, a modern horror experience packed with intrigue, emotion, twists, and the kind of choices that will keep you up at night.” Read the PlayStation announcement.
The announced premise follows a crew behind a popular paranormal channel. They are sent to an abandoned tropical island, where staged scares become real. Dr. Hill returns, again played by Peter Stormare. The announcement does not say that Josh or Sam will appear.

How the remake fits into the story
The remake revisits the original Until Dawn story; its reported post-credits scenes are new material, not the ending of the 2015 release. PlayStation announced the enhanced version for PS5 and PC on January 31, 2024, saying it was rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5 and included a third-person camera, improved visuals and animations, new or enhanced locations and interactions, and a score by Mark Korven. It set the remake’s release date as October 4, 2024. PlayStation’s remake announcement and release-date announcement provide those details.
