A 100% Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer score means every critic review currently counted for a film or TV show is classified as positive, or “Fresh.” It does not mean every critic gave it a perfect score, that every critic agrees about every aspect of it, or that you are guaranteed to enjoy it.
What does the Tomatometer measure?
Rotten Tomatoes defines the Tomatometer as “the percentage of professional critic reviews that are positive for a given film or television show.” The site counts approved critics’ and publications’ reviews as Fresh or Rotten; the Tomatometer is the percentage classified Fresh, not an average of critics’ numerical grades. Rotten Tomatoes’ About page explains the measure and its thresholds.
Rotten Tomatoes reviews critics and publications against its approval criteria and reevaluates them over time. When a review does not include a rating, the site’s curation team assigns its Fresh or Rotten classification; curators may ask reviewers to clarify their sentiment. See Tomatometer critic criteria and the Rotten Tomatoes FAQ.
Does 100% mean a movie is perfect?
No. It means all reviews currently included in the calculation are positive, not that critics awarded perfect marks. A critic can recommend a film while noting flaws, and a positive review contributes to the percentage regardless of whether its numerical rating is middling or exceptional.

The score is a summary of professional critical sentiment, not a measure of objective quality or a prediction of your personal response. Genre, subject, pacing, and other preferences affect whether a documentary or any other title works for you. Read a few individual reviews to understand what critics valued and what reservations they had.
Can a 100% score change?
Yes. Rotten Tomatoes describes its scores as fluid because the number of reviews can fluctuate. A score of 100% is therefore a snapshot of the reviews currently counted, not a permanent attribute of a title. New reviews may change the percentage.

When checking a particular title, look at its live page and note both the score and the review count, along with the date you checked. A percentage backed by a small number of reviews gives you less critical coverage to consider than the same percentage backed by many reviews; the score by itself does not show what those reviews say. Rotten Tomatoes discusses score changes in its FAQ.
How is the Tomatometer different from the Popcornmeter?
The Tomatometer summarizes professional critic reviews. The Popcornmeter summarizes user ratings, so the two can differ because they represent different groups and measures. Rotten Tomatoes counts a user rating of 3.5 stars or higher as positive; a full bucket appears when at least 60% of users rate a title at that level. The site may distinguish verified ratings from all user ratings. Check the label on the title page to see which audience measure is displayed. The definitions appear on the site’s About page and in its FAQ.
Is 100% the same as Certified Fresh?
No. Fresh status begins at 60%, while Certified Fresh requires a score of at least 75% plus other conditions, including minimum review counts that vary by release type and format. A 100% score clears the percentage threshold, but the percentage alone does not establish that a title meets every certification requirement. Rotten Tomatoes lists the definitions and criteria on its About page.

- Review count: See how many critic reviews currently support the percentage.
- Individual reviews: Look for comments on the documentary’s subject, evidence, perspective, and storytelling—not just whether a critic marked it Fresh.
- Audience response: Compare the Popcornmeter with the Tomatometer, checking whether audience ratings are identified as verified.
- Personal fit: Consider whether the topic, style, and approach suit what you want to watch.
Rotten Tomatoes also describes an Adjusted Tomatometer used in some editorial lists to account for review count, release year, and comparison with films released around the same time. Its FAQ says this adjusted figure is not the official Tomatometer score displayed on a title page. For the standard score, use the title page’s Tomatometer.
