Mainstreet Pictures produced the series for ITV; ITV’s materials name MASTERPIECE as co-producer and BBC Studios as international distributor. ITV announced that filming began in March 2024 and described the series as six 60-minute episodes. Its season 6 press pack was published on 13 February 2025.
In ITV’s 12 March 2024 announcement, Lang said: “I’m incredibly excited to be about to start filming the sixth series of Unforgotten, with a story that has been gestating for nearly eight years, since the 23rd June 2016, when our country seemed to fracture in two.” The remark describes how long the story had been developing, rather than spelling out the entire season’s themes.
