Under the Bridge is an eight-episode Hulu limited series inspired by Rebecca Godfrey’s nonfiction book about the 1997 murder of Reena Virk. It is a scripted drama, not a documentary reconstruction: the real case and source book underpin a story that adds characters and combines or fictionalizes elements for television.

What is Under the Bridge about?

The series follows author Rebecca Godfrey, played by Riley Keough, and local police officer Cam Bentland, played by Lily Gladstone, as they encounter the teenagers implicated in Virk’s killing and the community around the case. Hulu’s official synopsis and credits identify Quinn Shephard as the screenwriter adapting Godfrey’s book and ABC Signature as the producer. Hulu’s official series page provides the synopsis and credits.

Hulu lists one season with eight episodes and classifies the program as biography, drama, crime, and television series. Catalog availability can differ by region and change over time; Hulu’s listing is the place to check current access.

Is Under the Bridge based on a true story?

Yes. It adapts Rebecca Godfrey’s 2005 nonfiction book, Under the Bridge: The True Story of the Murder of Reena Virk, about the real case. The underlying events are historical, but the series is a dramatization: characters and connective story elements are shaped for television, so it should not be treated as a documentary record.

TIME’s April 18, 2024 account reports that fourteen-year-old Reena Virk went to a gathering near Craigflower Bridge in Saanich, British Columbia, on November 14, 1997, did not return home, and was found on November 22. TIME reports that a group of teens attacked her and that Kelly Ellard and Warren Glowatski were later convicted of her murder. These are historical claims as summarized by TIME, not a substitute for court records. Read TIME’s account of the case and the series’ changes.

What does the series change from the book and real case?

The most important distinction is between the real people and events, and the dramatic choices used to tell the story. The Television Academy’s May 14, 2024 report and TIME’s case account describe several significant adaptations:

  • Godfrey becomes a character. Keough plays the author as an investigator of sorts within the series. The Academy notes that Godfrey did not include herself in the book; TIME says the real Godfrey did not assist the investigation in the way her television counterpart does.
  • Cam Bentland is a composite. Gladstone’s character amalgamates real law-enforcement officers, rather than representing one specific officer, according to the Television Academy.
  • Most teen names are fictionalized. TIME reports that Godfrey changed the names of eight teens in the book and series, while retaining the names of Ellard and Glowatski, the two people convicted of Virk’s murder.
  • Some narrative links are dramatized. The series connects characters and events into a television storyline. A scene or relationship in the drama should not automatically be read as documented history simply because the central case is real.

For viewers comparing the show with the book or historical record, the useful questions are who is telling the story, whether a character represents one person or several, which names are real, and whether a scene is documented or dramatized.

Who is in the cast?

Performer Role Context
Riley Keough Rebecca Godfrey The author is portrayed as a character in the series; she did not include herself in the book.
Lily Gladstone Cam Bentland A composite character based on multiple real law-enforcement officers.
Vritika Gupta Reena Virk Hulu identifies Gupta as the performer playing Virk.

Hulu’s official page carries the series credits, and the Television Academy’s feature on the creators and cast discusses the adaptation and character choices.

What is the source book?

The series is based on Rebecca Godfrey’s Under the Bridge: The True Story of the Murder of Reena Virk, published in 2005. For a viewer who wants the nonfiction source behind the drama, the book is the most direct companion. The adaptation differs in point of view and characterization, so it is best approached as a related account rather than a scene-by-scene guide to the series.

How did the creators frame the story?

In the Television Academy’s May 14, 2024 report, co-showrunner Samir Mehta said the creators did not want to present the case only as a racially motivated crime, describing that as one part rather than the entire puzzle. This is Mehta’s account of the creative approach, not an objective finding about the case. The same report says Shephard wanted Godfrey’s own story represented because her childhood and experiences informed the book; Godfrey read scripts and sent notes while ill before her death ahead of filming.

What did critics say?

TIME critic Judy Berman’s April 16, 2024 review praised the performances and the series’ attention to social dynamics, writing that “thoughtful, empathetic writing and excellent performances make it more than just another dead-girl show.” She also found some added backstory overextended or contrived. That is one critic’s assessment, not a measure of consensus. Read Berman’s full review in TIME.
