Sphero’s Ultimate Lightning McQueen is a character-focused, app-controlled remote-control car, but it is now a legacy product: Sphero says it no longer supports it or supplies replacement parts, and its dedicated legacy app is no longer available for download through Sphero. For a used example, the key question is whether the seller can demonstrate a working connection with an app and device they already have—not whether a new owner can count on setting it up today.
What is Ultimate Lightning McQueen?
Ultimate Lightning McQueen is a physical Cars character toy controlled through a mobile app. It was designed to combine remote-control driving with expressive character movement and themed play, rather than function as a conventional car with a standalone handset. Entertainment Earth describes it as an app-enabled R/C vehicle.
That app dependency now matters as much as the toy itself. Sphero groups the product among its legacy products and says it cannot provide support or replacement parts for certain discontinued models.
Can you still use it, and does the app still work?
Sphero says its dedicated legacy app is no longer available for download. Its current Sphero Edu compatibility matrix lists Ultimate Lightning McQueen as a 2017 model but does not mark it compatible with the listed Sphero Edu platforms. Apple’s current Sphero Edu App listing also identifies Lightning McQueen among unsupported robots. The official Sphero app catalog focuses on currently supported product families rather than this toy.
#1 Best Overall
- Disney and Pixar's Moving Moments toy cars bring characters to life with changing expressions.
- Simply move the vehicles from side to side to watch their eyes and mouth like it's straight out of the movies.
- Kids can recreate scenes and find new adventure with fan-favorite Lightning McQueen racecar.
- Designed in a larger scale, the plastic vehicle is easy for smaller hands to push and play.
- Makes a great gift for kids and Cars fans ages 4 years old and up.
That does not establish whether a previously installed app still works on a particular older phone, or whether a specific used unit will connect. Do not assume you can install an official control app on a new device. If you are considering buying one, ask the seller to demonstrate the car connecting and responding using the device and app they already have.
How it was reviewed at launch
Reviews published around the 2017 launch described app-based driving and character-oriented interactions. Tech Advisor also reported a pit-stop game and discussed a movie watch-along concept. However, its reviewer could not test that mode because it was not enabled in the review version. Stuff likewise praised the character impression but said it could not test the movie-listening feature. Those are period impressions, not evidence that the feature works today.
Tech Advisor’s discussion of a planned expansion to later Cars films was a 2017-era statement; it should not be read as a current feature or availability promise.

Historical specifications
Entertainment Earth lists the following product specifications. They are retailer-published figures, not independent measurements or guarantees for a second-hand unit.
| Specification | Retailer listing |
|---|---|
| Mobile compatibility | iOS and Android |
| Wireless connection | Bluetooth Smart 4.0 |
| Range | 30 meters |
| Maximum speed | Up to 6 mph |
| Battery life | Up to 40 minutes |
| Charge time | About one hour |
| Approximate dimensions | 9.9 × 5 × 3.25 inches |
The battery-life figure is especially uncertain for a used toy: an aged battery may perform very differently from the original claim.

There is no current supported version of this exact toy established here for comparison. Treat a second-hand purchase as buying a legacy character toy whose app access and condition need to be verified directly.

- App access: Have the seller show it connecting and responding through the app and device they have. Do not rely on an assumption that the app can be downloaded anew.
- Physical condition: Check that the wheels, articulated mouth, display, body, and charging equipment are intact and working.
- Battery behavior: Ask how long it runs after a full charge; do not treat the historical up-to-40-minute listing as a used-unit guarantee.
- Completeness and seller terms: Confirm which charger and accessories are included, and review the return policy. Sphero says it cannot provide support or replacement parts for certain discontinued models.
These checks are practical precautions for an app-dependent legacy toy, not a claim that every used example has the same faults. If a listing does not show a working connection or offer a reasonable return option, weigh that uncertainty against the price and your tolerance for a display-only collectible.
Verdict
Ultimate Lightning McQueen was built to make remote-control play feel like interacting with the Cars character, and launch-era reviews found that character-led approach appealing. Today, its legacy status changes the buying decision: the dedicated app is no longer available for download through Sphero, current Sphero Edu materials do not support it, and official support and parts are unavailable for certain discontinued models. It may suit a collector or buyer who can verify a working setup before purchase, but it is a risky choice as a plug-and-play gift for someone relying on a new phone.
