Who Udo Kier was
Kier was born Udo Kierspe in Cologne, Germany, on October 14, 1944. According to the Associated Press, he moved to London at 18 and was discovered at a coffee bar by the singer and future filmmaker Michael Sarne. He later explained his decision to act in a line the AP quoted from a Variety interview: “I liked the attention, so I became an actor.” The AP attributes that interview to 2024, so the remark dates from the year before his death rather than from the time of his first acting work.

A career that moved between three worlds
Kier’s career is easier to follow when it is split into the three strands that defined it: European art cinema, horror, and Hollywood studio films. Many of his roles sit across more than one of these.
European art cinema
He worked repeatedly with directors who shaped the postwar European and independent scene. Rainer Werner Fassbinder and Werner Herzog are both named among his collaborators. His most frequent partnership was with Lars von Trier, whose films Breaking the Waves and Dancer in the Dark are among the best-known titles on his résumé.

Horror and cult cinema
Kier’s early international profile came largely through Paul Morrissey’s Flesh for Frankenstein (1973) and Blood for Dracula (1974), both produced by Andy Warhol. Both films are often cited as cult horror, and they remain the clearest entry point to his work outside mainstream releases.
American film and the role that reached U.S. audiences
Kier played Hans in Gus Van Sant’s My Own Private Idaho (1991), a film starring River Phoenix and Keanu Reeves. The AP says the film introduced him to many American moviegoers, and Netflix Tudum describes the role as his breakthrough with U.S. audiences. Later mainstream appearances include Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Armageddon, and Blade.

How many credits he had
Two outlets reported the size of his filmography, using different wording:
- The Associated Press (2025) describes more than 200 film and television credits.
- Netflix Tudum (2025) describes more than 200 films.
The two counts are not the same measure, and neither source gives a precise total, so the figures should be read as “more than 200” in each case.

Where to start if you know him from one film
For readers who first encountered Kier in My Own Private Idaho, a practical way into the rest of his work is to split it by strand. Start with a Van Sant or von Trier title for the art-house side, a Morrissey and Warhol production for the cult horror side, and a studio film such as Blade for the mainstream side. Each strand shows a different range of his screen presence, and the three do not rank against one another.
Availability of any title on a particular streaming service or physical edition varies by region and changes over time, so check current listings before watching.

Why the coverage matters
Kier’s death was reported by the Associated Press, Variety, the Los Angeles Times, and Netflix Tudum. Those outlets agree on the date, place, age, and the confirmation by McBride. Where they differ is in how they describe his filmography, which is why the credit figures above are kept separate.
