Jada Pinkett Smith is the clearest documented example of a close Hollywood friendship in Tupac Shakur’s life. They met as students at Baltimore School for the Arts and remained connected as their careers developed. Madonna was another prominent connection, described in biographical coverage as both a friend and romantic partner; actor Mickey Rourke was Shakur’s co-star in Bullet. Those relationships are not interchangeable, and the available accounts do not establish a definitive ranking of Shakur’s closest friends.
Was Jada Pinkett Smith friends with Tupac?
Yes. Pinkett Smith and Shakur met at Baltimore School for the Arts, before either became an established Hollywood figure. Her first-person account describes an enduring, emotionally close bond marked by affection, disagreements, and strain—not a simple, frictionless friendship.
In her TIME essay adapted from her memoir Worthy, Pinkett Smith wrote: “With Pac, I learned it was possible to love a guy deeply without it having anything to do with sexual attraction.” Her account in TIME makes clear that she understood their love as profound but not sexual. The Associated Press, independently summarizing her memoir, likewise reported that she said they did not have romantic feelings for one another. The AP report provides a separate account of that distinction.
That makes Pinkett Smith the strongest example here of a close personal friendship—not evidence of a concealed romance. Her own recollections are also a reminder that closeness can include conflict as well as devotion.

How do the other notable connections differ?
| Person | Documented connection | What the evidence supports |
|---|---|---|
| Jada Pinkett Smith | School friends who stayed close as adults | Pinkett Smith’s first-person recollection and AP’s independent summary support describing a deep friendship, not a romantic relationship. |
| Madonna | Prominent entertainer described in a biographical overview as a friend and dating partner | A notable personal and romantic connection; the available account does not support treating it as purely platonic or making more precise chronology claims. |
| Mickey Rourke | Shakur and Rourke appeared together in the film Bullet | A clear co-starring connection. A shared film credit alone does not establish how close they were privately. |
| Jasmine Guy | Named in broader biographical context | The available biographical material does not establish the duration or closeness of a friendship. |
Biography.com’s biographical overview of Shakur is useful for broad context and the Bullet connection, but it is a secondary summary rather than direct testimony about intimate relationships. The Washington Post also reported on comments by Will Smith about the friendship; that account adds context but is not needed to establish the basic history. Read the Washington Post’s coverage.
What can be said confidently—and what cannot?
The best-supported way to describe Shakur’s Hollywood relationships is to distinguish how each person knew him. Pinkett Smith was a school friend whose own account describes a close, complicated bond. Madonna was a prominent personal connection that biographical coverage says included romance. Rourke was a co-star. Guy appears in a broader biographical account, but the available material does not establish the closeness of their relationship.

These sources do not provide a complete roster or a reliable ranking of Shakur’s “most famous” or closest friends. Nor do they justify treating every co-star or public association as a personal confidant. The documented connections are notable for different reasons, and only Pinkett Smith’s relationship is described in the available first-person account as a sustained, deeply close friendship.
