Donald Trump launched his TikTok account on Saturday night, June 1, 2024, with a video filmed at a UFC event in Newark, New Jersey. By the following Sunday morning, TechCrunch reported that the post had drawn more than 31 million views and Trump’s account had 1.7 million followers. Those are figures reported at publication in 2024, not current totals.
What was in Trump’s first TikTok post?
The video opened with UFC CEO Dana White telling viewers, “The President is now on TikTok.” Trump replied, “It’s my honor,” before footage showed him among the crowd at a UFC event in Newark. The post marked his arrival on the platform the night before TechCrunch’s June 2, 2024 report. TechCrunch’s account of the launch recorded more than 31 million views for the post and 1.7 million followers for Trump at the time of publication.
Why was the launch a political reversal?
Trump had tried to ban TikTok while president, but by 2024 he was publicly opposing a ban. In a May 2024 Truth Social post quoted by TechCrunch, he wrote: “Just so everyone knows, especially the young people, Crooked Joe Biden is responsible for banning TikTok.” The shift put his new account in sharp contrast with his earlier effort to restrict the app.
TechCrunch described TikTok as having 170 million U.S. users in 2024, a figure that helps explain the platform’s political significance. A large audience and rapid attention to one post show reach, not whether viewers were persuaded or how the account affected an election.

What law framed the debate in 2024?
On April 24, 2024, Congress enacted Public Law 118-50, whose short title includes the “Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act.” The law restricted app-store and internet-hosting support for TikTok unless a qualified divestiture occurred within the statutory period. The law was the backdrop to the June launch: Trump opposed a ban while Congress had enacted a framework tying TikTok’s continued U.S. distribution and hosting to divestiture.
