Why did she sing a cappella?
Contemporaneous reporting by The Washington Post described an apparent audio or technical issue that delayed the expected start. Underwood waited, then began singing without accompaniment and told the audience, “If you know the words, help me out here.” The report said people in the Rotunda joined in and applauded at the end. What did Underwood say about accepting the invitation?
In a statement reported by the Associated Press before the event, Underwood said, “I love our country and am honored to have been asked to sing at the Inauguration and to be a small part of this historic event.” She added that she was “humbled to answer the call at a time when we must all come together in the spirit of unity and looking to the future.” Those remarks describe her stated reason for taking part; the performance alone does not establish a broader political position.
