No report establishes that Travis Kelce lost $100,000 at the 2024 Kentucky Derby. Contemporary coverage described the figure as a potential payout he narrowly missed when his pick, Forever Young, finished third. A later entertainment report separately said Kelce had reportedly bought Taylor Swift a gold-and-diamond horseshoe necklace; it did not show that the gift was a response to the race.
What the $100,000 Derby story actually means
Kelce reportedly said he could have won $100,000 if Forever Young had finished second. Us Weekly framed it as a possible payout, and Mahoning Matters described him as nearly winning that amount—not as wagering or losing $100,000. Neither report establishes the size of his stake or a $100,000 loss. Us Weekly’s May 8, 2024 report and Mahoning Matters’ May 9, 2024 report support the near-payout framing.
Where Forever Young finished
The 150th Kentucky Derby was held May 4, 2024. Mystik Dan won by a nose, Sierra Leone placed second, and Forever Young finished third. That result explains why the reported second-place scenario did not happen; it does not tell us how much Kelce wagered or what he may have received under other possible outcomes. What is reported about the necklace
A July 13, 2024, Showbiz Cheat Sheet article included a “limited edition gold and diamond horseshoe necklace” in a list of gifts Kelce reportedly purchased for Swift. It is a secondary entertainment report: it does not identify a jeweler or exact model, provide item-specific verification, or establish a price for this necklace. Was it an immediate gift after the bet?
The available reports do not establish that Kelce gave Swift the necklace immediately after the Derby, or that the bet prompted the gift. The necklace appears in a later account of gifts reportedly bought during the couple’s first year of dating, while coverage of the race discusses the near-missed payout. Treating those two reports as a documented cause-and-effect story goes beyond what they say.
Kelce’s Derby appearance
Mahoning Matters reported that Kelce attended as a guest of Bruce Zoldan and quoted him saying, “I’m a Derby guy now, man. It was so much fun.” The report also noted that Swift was not pictured at the event. This is context for Kelce’s presence at the race, not evidence about the necklace or the amount of any wager.
