On October 27, 2025, GameStop answered a White House Halo post by placing Donald Trump in the role of Master Chief and JD Vance in the role of Cortana, using a fuller-faced meme of Vance that had been circulating online earlier that year. The exchange was a meme-driven joke. It was not a policy statement, and it did not report any change in competition between console makers.
How the exchange unfolded
The sequence, as reported by The Daily Beast and other outlets, ran roughly like this. Press reports place every post on October 27, 2025, but none of the coverage gives timestamps for individual posts, so the order below reflects how the reports describe the exchange rather than exact times.
- The setup. GameStop published a parody declaring that the console wars had ended. The joke followed the announcement of Halo: Campaign Evolved for PlayStation 5 as well as Xbox.
- The White House post. The White House posted an image of Donald Trump as Master Chief with the line “Power to the Players.”
- The GameStop reply. GameStop answered with an image placing Trump as Master Chief alongside JD Vance as Cortana.
- The repost. According to The Daily Beast, the White House reposted GameStop’s image.
The Vance figure is the part most readers ask about. It draws on a meme that existed before this exchange, not on anything GameStop originated.
Why “the console wars are over” is a joke
The line is parody. Coverage treats it as a punchline built on the Halo announcement, and none of the reporting describes an actual end to rivalry among console makers. Readers should take the phrase as a bit of trolling about platform loyalty, not as news about the video game market.

The Halo context explains why the joke landed. The franchise began as an Xbox series, with Halo: Combat Evolved launching on the original Xbox in 2001. A new entry announced for PlayStation 5 as well as Xbox is therefore a visible break from that history, which is the hook GameStop used. Windows Central lists Halo Infinite (Campaign) among the franchise’s entries. This article does not assess its current price, platforms, or availability.
The images and who made them
The Trump image
The Daily Beast describes the Trump image as AI-generated and says it uses Trump’s mugshot. Reporting does not explain how the image was produced, so this article does not go beyond calling it AI-generated.

The Vance image
The Vance figure uses the fuller-faced meme that had spread on social media earlier in 2025. The Atlantic’s March 2025 coverage described edited images showing Vance with cartoonishly chubby cheeks and noted how the trend spread. GameStop’s post is a later use of that meme, not its origin.

The Daily Beast reported that a GameStop spokesperson said: “Video games and s–tposting bringing people together. MGGA.” The spokesperson explained that MGGA stood for “Make gaming great again,” a riff on the White House’s own slogan.

The White House
White House spokesman Kush Desai responded: “Yet another war ended under President Trump’s watch—only one leader is fully committed to giving power to the players and that leader is Donald J. Trump.” This is a political response from the White House, not an independent assessment of the video game industry.

- Reach. None of the coverage reports view counts, engagement totals, or any effect on GameStop’s sales or the market. Claims about how widely the posts spread are unsupported.
- Microsoft’s response. PC Gamer’s later coverage discusses other government uses of Halo imagery, and says Microsoft had nothing to share on that separate matter. That later episode does not show how Microsoft responded to the GameStop exchange, which remains unreported in the coverage reviewed here.
- Intent beyond the joke. The coverage treats the exchange as partisan trolling. It does not establish any business arrangement between GameStop and the White House, or any agreement between platform holders.
What is established is narrow: GameStop and the White House traded Halo-themed images on October 27, 2025, the Vance figure drew on an existing meme, and both sides used the exchange for political and commercial jokes.
