Born Khurshid (also spelled Khursheed) Akhtar, she began performing as a teenager and went on to appear in films including Aar Paar, Tarana and Sharada.
Who was Shyama?
Shyama was the screen name of Khurshid Akhtar, a Hindi film actress whose career included child roles as well as leading and supporting parts. Scroll’s 2017 tribute reports that she was born in Lahore on 7 June 1935. It says her screen career began as a teenager in a qawwali sequence in Zeenat (1945), after which filmmaker Vijay Bhatt gave her the name Shyama. Scroll’s tribute recounts these early milestones.

What films was Shyama known for?
Her screen credits included a range of Hindi films rather than a single defining role. Scroll named more than 140 films to her credit; that figure is the tribute’s reported total, not an independently audited count. Representative titles mentioned by the reports include:
- Tarana (1951), one of the films associated with her rise.
- Aar Paar (1954), a notable film associated with filmmaker Guru Dutt.
- Bhai-Bhai (1956), another frequently cited screen credit.
- Sharada (1957), for which she received a Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress.
- Barsaat Ki Raat (1960), among her other notable credits.
The Times of India also highlighted her work in Aar Paar and Bhai-Bhai in its report on her death. The Times of India report and Filmcity One’s memorial also name Barsaat Ki Raat.

In a 2013 interview on Rajya Sabha Television’s Guftagoo, conducted by Irfan, Shyama said, as quoted in Scroll’s tribute: “I never needed to be taught [about acting]… I was confident and didn’t need to think too much,” Scroll’s 2017 tribute reproduces the remark.
