Spoilers for the ending and end-credit scene of Transformers One. D-16 becomes Megatron after Sentinel Prime’s betrayal destroys his faith in the leader he admired. The end-credit scene then gives Megatron’s followers a name: the Decepticons. Director Josh Cooley said the scene was moved to the credits so the main transformation would not be overloaded with too many revelations.
Why does D-16 become Megatron?
D-16 and Orion Pax begin as friends, but the discovery that Sentinel Prime betrayed Cybertron and the Transformers changes how D-16 sees the world. Sentinel had been presented as a respected, public-facing leader—and someone D-16 admired. Once his deception is exposed, D-16’s anger and disillusionment drive him toward a different path from Orion.

Director Josh Cooley told io9/Gizmodo that the filmmakers wanted viewers to understand D-16’s anger and follow how the betrayal changed him. Cooley also said the character arc developed as the team worked on his trajectory; it was not fully formed in its final version from the outset.
That context makes the turn more than a new name or a sudden villain reveal. D-16’s response to Sentinel’s betrayal becomes a dividing line between him and Orion. Understanding the motive does not mean the film asks viewers to approve of the violence and choices that follow.

What happens in the Transformers One end-credit scene?
After Orion Pax has become Optimus Prime and D-16 has become Megatron, Megatron gives his followers a new identity. He adopts Megatronus Prime’s symbol as their mark, calls the group the Decepticons, and urges them to rise up. Starscream, Soundwave, and Shockwave are among the followers shown with him.
The scene establishes the Decepticons as an organized faction and points toward conflict with Optimus and his side on Cybertron. It sets up a possible continuation of the story, but it is not confirmation that a sequel has been approved or that any specific future plot will happen.
Why did director Josh Cooley move the reveal to the credits?
In an earlier version, D-16 would have declared that the group would no longer be deceived and would become Decepticons in the same sequence where he puts in his cog and says, “I’m Megatron.” Cooley told io9/Gizmodo that this put too many developments into one moment. The filmmakers still wanted the faction scene, so they moved it to after the main story.
“And that way, that’s the only time we hear the word ‘Decepticon’ is right there at the very, very end.”

Transformers One [Blu-ray] [Region A & B & C]
- science fiction, action, adventure, animation, family, fantasy
— Josh Cooley, director, speaking to Germain Lussier for io9/Gizmodo, September 23, 2024
The placement lets D-16’s transformation and the naming of the faction land as separate developments. Cooley’s comment explains the editing choice; the final, memorable reveal is the effect that choice creates.
