“Transformers Is Going on an Apology Tour” is a tongue-in-cheek description of Hasbro’s 40th-anniversary campaign for The Transformers: The Movie, the 1986 animated feature. The “apology” is for the film’s decision to kill Optimus Prime—not an apology delivered by a character, and not a sign that the movie has been changed. The celebration includes a 4K theatrical rerelease.
What is Hasbro apologizing for?
The joke points to Optimus Prime’s death early in The Transformers: The Movie. The film’s abrupt loss of the Autobots’ leader is the past story decision behind the campaign’s apologetic framing. Space.com’s May 24, 2026 report connects the phrase to that plot point: Space.com’s report on the apology-tour campaign.
It is promotional humor about a choice in the 1986 film, not evidence that Hasbro is apologizing on behalf of a character or has revised the movie.
What does the 40th-anniversary campaign include?
Hasbro’s September 17, 2026 Transformers Day announcement places a 4K theatrical rerelease, a tribute to Peter Cullen, and product reveals within the film’s year-long 40th-anniversary celebration. The announcement describes an event around the original feature, not a new cut. See Hasbro’s anniversary announcement.
