“Ménage à trois” can describe more than a sexual encounter: it can mean a shared household, a negotiated relationship, or a triangle whose members struggle over love and power. The British Film Institute’s survey of films about these relationships offers a useful pool of candidates, but it does not rank individual scenes. This list is an editorial ranking, weighing how clearly each moment expresses the relationship, the characters’ agency, the performances, the filmmaking, and the scene’s place in its film’s legacy. Not every entry depicts an equal or happy arrangement.

10. I Am Michael (2015): A loving collective before the rupture

The scene

Before Michael’s later change of direction, he and his partner Bennett invite a third man into their relationship. It is an intimate moment that presents their arrangement as a shared choice rather than a conventional two-person romance.

Why it belongs

The scene matters partly because the film does not leave the relationship in this phase. Its later events make the earlier intimacy feel vulnerable to change. The story concerns a real person, so the relationship is best approached as one part of a complicated life, not as a simple morality tale.

9. Entertaining Mr Sloane (1970): Desire turns into a bargaining game

The scene

Kath, her brother, and Sloane circle one another through comic obsession, blackmail, and negotiation. The siblings’ competing interest in Sloane gives their attempts to secure him a place in the family the flavor of a domestic arrangement being assembled by force of personality.

Why it belongs

Joe Orton’s dark comedy makes the triangle less a portrait of settled romance than a battle over who gets to define the relationship. Its wit comes from watching desire become leverage.

8. A Zed and Two Noughts (1985): A triangle shaped by grief and artifice

The scene

Peter Greenaway’s film draws Oswald and Oliver, twin brothers, into a romantic relationship with Alba, a woman whose life is already marked by loss. The relevant relationship moments are not a conventional threesome: their force comes from the unusual bond among the three and the brothers’ shared fixation.

Why it belongs

Greenaway frames the story with stylized, deliberate images and grief-haunted ideas. The film’s extraordinary final sequence gives the relationship an unsettling visual and emotional destination rather than an ordinary romantic resolution.

7. Manji (1964): A triangle that cannot hold its shape

The scene

Yasuzo Masumura’s film follows Sonoko and Mitsuko as their relationship becomes entangled with the claims of the men around them. Its triangle is less a stable arrangement than a contest over attachment, possession, and control.

Why it belongs

The film’s final sequence brings the arrangement to a point where one member is lost. That endpoint gives the story’s earlier intimacy a tragic charge: desire here does not produce an easy shared life.

6. Les Valseuses (1974): Jeanne Moreau changes the temperature

The scene

The BFI identifies the men’s threesome with Jeanne, played by Jeanne Moreau, as a defining candidate moment. Moreau’s presence lends the encounter an unexpected poignancy, even as the film’s sexual dynamics remain troubling.

Why it belongs

This is not an example of an equal or uncomplicated relationship. The same film includes violence toward Marie-Ange and treats women through a notably objectifying lens. The scene is worth considering for the tension between Moreau’s performance and the misogyny surrounding it, not as an endorsement of the arrangement.

5. Gazon maudit / French Twist (1995): A domestic farce upends the expected couple

The scene

Marijo seduces Loli and moves into the home Loli shares with her husband. The resulting household rearranges the familiar image of a married couple disrupted by a younger woman: the woman who enters the marriage is not simply a temporary temptation, and the consequences play out as domestic comedy.

Why it belongs

Josiane Balasko’s farce makes the living arrangement itself the source of comic pressure. It keeps the question of who belongs in the home—and on what terms—at the center of the triangle.

4. The Dreamers (2003): Three people in an enclosed world

The scene

In Paris in 1968, American student Matthew becomes close to siblings Isabelle and Theo. The intimate scenes in the apartment make their three-way bond feel like a private world, shaped by the siblings’ closeness as well as Matthew’s place within it.

Why it belongs

The family relationship changes the meaning of the trio’s intimacy; it cannot be treated as a simple, uncomplicated romance. The film also draws heavily on cinema itself, so the apartment’s games and references to movies make the characters’ enclosed world feel built from both desire and film history. Its ending unsettles the place Matthew has assumed within that world.

3. Being John Malkovich (1999): Sharing a love through someone else’s mind

The scene

Craig and Lotte discover a mind-portal that lets them inhabit actor John Malkovich, and both become drawn to Maxine. Their arrangement makes “sharing” literal in a way that is as surreal as it is emotionally legible: the triangle’s participants do not all occupy the same body or experience their connection in the same way.

Why it belongs

The film resists a tidy label for the relationship. Its comic premise gives a strange, sharp form to questions of desire, access, and agency—who is acting, who is being experienced, and whose feelings count.

2. Jules et Jim (1962): The shared life at the heart of a classic triangle

The scene

During a period of relative harmony, Catherine, Jules, and Jim live together. That shared domestic phase is the clearest expression of the film’s central possibility: two friends and the woman they both love trying to make a life together.

Why it belongs

François Truffaut’s film follows the relationship over twenty-five years, giving this episode of cohabitation a place inside a much longer story of affection, change, and strain. Jeanne Moreau, Oskar Werner, and Henri Serre anchor the triangle with performances that make its domestic ease and underlying tension equally important.

1. Y tu mamá también (2001): Luisa redirects the night

The scene

On a road trip, a drunken evening with Luisa and the two young men gradually moves toward a threesome. But the encounter is not simply the boys’ fantasy coming true: Luisa redirects the evening, and the scene’s balance shifts with her choices.

Why it belongs

Alfonso Cuarón makes the trio’s wider journey feel increasingly intense and sensual, so the night grows out of a developing alliance rather than arriving from nowhere. Luisa’s agency gives the moment its defining edge; the relationship is compelling because she is an active participant in shaping what happens.

How to read this ranking

The order is a critical judgment, not an institutional verdict. The BFI’s survey identifies ten films about ménage-à-trois relationships, but it does not rank these scenes. The selections also span distinct forms—from a shared home to an encounter shaped by a surreal premise—and should not be treated as interchangeable models of consent, equality, or lasting happiness.
