Havoc can feel like John Wick when its action turns into violent, stylized spectacle—especially in a nightclub showdown singled out by a Tom’s Guide review. The resemblance is about action energy, not a shared story or franchise mythology. Havoc is a Gareth Evans crime thriller about a detective caught in a corrupt criminal network, and the same review argues that its messy narrative keeps it below John Wick as an action benchmark.

What is Havoc about?
Netflix describes Havoc as a high-octane action thriller written and directed by Gareth Evans. Tom Hardy plays detective Walker, who is pulled into a violent criminal web after a drug deal goes wrong. A criminal syndicate, a crooked politician and fellow police officers are all pursuing him. Netflix’s official listings also name Timothy Olyphant and Forest Whitaker among the leads.

Netflix classifies the film as violent and gritty, and uses action-thriller, rogue-cop and detective descriptors. That points to a crime story rooted in compromised institutions and street-level danger—not the same premise as John Wick.
Where does the John Wick comparison fit?
Action spectacle and intensity
The clearest point of comparison is the physical, highly stylized action. The Tom’s Guide review likens a nightclub showdown in Havoc to the first John Wick film. That is a comparison of how a set piece feels: a sustained burst of violent action staged for impact. It does not mean the films share choreography, characters or a cinematic universe.

Crime worlds and protagonists
Their crime settings serve different stories. Havoc follows a detective through a corrupt network involving criminals, politics and the police. The available evidence supports no broader claim that its world or plot follows John Wick’s model. The useful comparison is narrower: both can appeal to viewers looking for hard-edged action, but Walker’s role as a detective shapes Havoc around a different set of stakes.
Narrative clarity
The comparison has limits beyond premise. Tom’s Guide praises the action but describes Havoc’s narrative as messy, placing it below John Wick as an overall action benchmark. In other words, the film may deliver a similar jolt in a major set piece without matching the clarity or cohesion that makes an action story easy to follow.

What shapes Havoc beyond that comparison?
A What to Watch guide reports that Evans drew on influences including John Woo and Ringo Lam, and describes Havoc as a hard-boiled cop thriller unfolding over two nights before Christmas. Those reported influences place the film in a wider action tradition; they do not establish that it is modeled on John Wick.
There is also a quieter way to read the film. In Time’s analysis, a subdued exchange between parents is read through fatigue, guilt and Walker’s troubled past. That is a critical interpretation, rather than a claim that the film abandons its action-thriller premise.
