If you are looking for the epic adventure with two brothers riding out after the Civil War to rescue their family, that is The Shadow Riders.
Which title matches the “epic TV Western adventure” description
Both productions are Louis L’Amour adaptations, and both put Selleck and Elliott in brother roles. The plot is what separates them. The Shadow Riders is the post-Civil War rescue story. The Sacketts is a longer, sprawling saga of three brothers chasing fortune. Apple TV’s biography of Elliott groups the two as the pair of L’Amour-based TV films the actors made together, and it does not describe any other Selleck and Elliott Western for television.
The Shadow Riders
Sony Pictures’ official page for The Shadow Riders identifies Selleck as Mac Traven and Elliott as Dal Traven. The Travens return home to a town ravaged by rebels who have refused to surrender. The gang kidnaps the younger sisters and Kate, Dal’s sweetheart. The brothers break their uncle, Black Jack, out of prison and then head toward Mexico to get the captives back.
Plot in brief
Apple TV’s shorter listing for The Shadow Riders gives the same core story: the brothers come back after the Civil War, find the family taken by rebel guerrillas, and set out to rescue them. The film is a compact adventure rather than a multi-generation saga.

The Sacketts
In The Sacketts, Selleck plays Orrin Sackett and Elliott plays Tell Sackett. Apple TV describes it as a three-brother Western saga built on blood feuds, cattle drives, gold strikes and the brothers’ pursuit of fortune. At 3 hours 9 minutes, per Apple TV’s listing as accessed in 2026, it is roughly twice the length of The Shadow Riders.
A date you will see two ways
The release year for The Sacketts is not consistent across Apple TV’s own pages. Elliott’s biography describes it as an NBC TV film from 1978. The title’s metadata lists it as a 1979 release. Treat it as the earlier of the two productions, and use whichever year matches the source you are citing.

Keep 1883 separate
Elliott is also a lead in 1883, the Taylor Sheridan-created prequel to Yellowstone, alongside Tim McGraw and Faith Hill. Paramount describes it that way in its August 4, 2021 announcement. Selleck is not part of that series, so it is not a Selleck and Elliott collaboration.

If you want to read the source material, the Sackett books are the natural companion. The adaptations are described as based on Louis L’Amour’s Western storytelling, but the sources reviewed here do not specify which novels each film draws from or how closely. Check the edition’s relationship to the adaptation before you assume one book matches one film.

Common confusions
- “The Sacketts” as a 1980s movie: it is the earlier production, and its Apple TV metadata gives 1979 while the Elliott biography gives 1978.
- Brothers on a Civil War rescue: that story belongs to The Shadow Riders, not The Sacketts.
- Elliott’s Paramount series: 1883 features Elliott but not Selleck.
