He said he would like to think that, fourteen years into the character’s story, Loki is making “some slightly more generous, loving, and heroic choices.” That distinction—between past harm and a changed direction—is the heart of Loki’s journey.
Did Tom Hiddleston say Loki is a hero?
Not quite. In an April 2024 interview, Hiddleston acknowledged that Loki’s earlier decisions could make him look like a villain and described those choices as misguided. His wording about what came later was deliberately tentative: “I’d like to think that, you know, 14 years later, he’s making some slightly more generous, loving, and heroic choices.” Gizmodo reported the remark after his appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!.

So “hero” is best understood as Hiddleston’s description of Loki’s later moral direction—not a declaration that Loki’s earlier actions no longer matter, or a verdict everyone must share. The contrast is stark: Loki once tried to take over New York; in the Disney+ series, his choices and sense of purpose move in a different direction.
What changed in Loki’s journey?
From power to purpose
Hiddleston has connected the later story to questions of free will, personal choice, meaning, identity, and family. That makes Loki’s development less a clean switch from “villain” to “hero” than a struggle over what to do with his power and what kind of person to become. The story’s moral weight comes from the choices changing, not from the past being erased.

A conclusion to an arc, not an erasure of the past
Speaking about the Season 2 finale on The Tonight Show in November 2023, Hiddleston said it was “the conclusion to Season 2 … It’s also the conclusion to six films, and 12 episodes, and 14 years of my life.” TheWrap reported his comments on the finale’s significance and how it echoed the different versions of Loki he had played.
That sense of completion fits the character’s journey: a long-running story can give Loki a meaningful ending without pretending that his earlier choices were harmless. Hiddleston described the conclusion as satisfying while emphasizing the character’s reconsideration of purpose, free will, identity, and family.

When asked in 2024 whether this was the last viewers would see of Loki, Hiddleston replied, “I don’t know, I really don’t know.” He said Season 2 had reached “some sort of narrative conclusion” that felt satisfying to him, not that he would never play the character again. Gizmodo’s report captures that distinction.
In April 2025, The Direct reported Hiddleston’s casting in Avengers: Doomsday and quoted him describing Loki as “an extraordinary chapter of my life” that was “not over yet.” That later comment makes clear why a satisfying Season 2 conclusion should not be read as proof that the actor’s appearances—or Loki’s story on screen—had ended. It does not, by itself, settle the character’s next role or the film’s eventual release details.
