Tom Stoppard, the playwright and screenwriter whose work ranged from Shakespearean reinvention to modern history, died at 88 on November 29, 2025. United Agents, his representatives, said he died peacefully at home in Dorset, surrounded by family, according to the Associated Press.

What was reported about Stoppard’s death

United Agents announced Stoppard’s death and said his family were with him. The agency’s statement, as reported by the Associated Press, said: “He will be remembered for his works, for their brilliance and humanity, and for his wit, his irreverence, his generosity of spirit and his profound love of the English language.” The statement was attributed to United Agents, not to a named individual.

From wartime displacement to a British writing career

Born Tomáš Sträussler in Zlín, then part of Czechoslovakia, in 1937, Stoppard came from a Jewish family that fled after the Nazi invasion and later settled in Britain. His family history became an explicit subject in Leopoldstadt. The Associated Press reported that Stoppard learned after his mother’s death in 1996 that many relatives, including all four of his grandparents, had died in concentration camps.

The play that brought him to prominence

Stoppard’s stage breakthrough was Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, which premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe in 1966. The play turns two minor figures from Shakespeare’s Hamlet into its central characters. It introduced a career whose work crossed stage, screen, radio and television, engaging with Shakespeare, science, philosophy and twentieth-century history, as the Associated Press described it.

Ways to encounter Stoppard’s work

Reading a playtext and attending a live performance offer different ways into Stoppard’s writing: the page makes the language available at the reader’s pace, while a production interprets it through performance. For a reading starting point, Faber lists an Arcadia playscript, and the National Theatre Shop lists a Faber & Faber playtext of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. Current production schedules and availability are not established here.
