Spoilers for Season 4, Episode 2, “Part 2.” The episode brings the Tsalal researchers’ deaths and Annie Kowtok’s unsolved murder into the same investigation. Raymond Clark emerges as a crucial lead, but the episode does not establish that he killed Annie—or explain the recurring spiral.
Episode 2 at a glance
Officially titled “Part 2,” Season 4, Episode 2 debuted in the U.S. on January 21, 2024. HBO’s synopsis describes Danvers and Prior investigating Tsalal while Navarro and Danvers separately uncover a connection between one of the researchers and Annie. That discovery brings the former partners back together.
The episode’s key shift is from two apparently separate cases to one shared inquiry. Its clues point toward links among Annie, Clark, and Tsalal, but they do not yet resolve who killed Annie or what happened to the researchers.
10 major reveals and clues
1. The frozen researchers become an active crime scene
Danvers has the mass of frozen Tsalal researchers moved to the town ice rink so the bodies can thaw. The scene reveals injuries and a scientist who appears to be alive, unsettling the initial assumption that everyone trapped in the ice is dead. The bodies are no longer just evidence of a presumed mass death; what happened to them remains under investigation.

2. Raymond Clark becomes the link between the cases
Clark stands out through the pink parka associated with him, his spiral tattoo, and the detectives’ growing inference that he and Annie had a secret relationship. Those details make him central to the investigation. They do not prove he murdered Annie.
3. The spiral appears in both investigations
The spiral is seen on Annie, on Clark, on a scientist’s forehead, and at the trailer. The repeated symbol is a clue to track, not an answer: its meaning in Night Country is still unknown at this point.

4. Annie and Clark had a hidden meeting place
Navarro’s inquiries lead Danvers and Navarro to an old trailer at the Nook, identified in episode coverage as a concealed meeting place connected to Annie and Clark. Finding it gives the detectives a tangible connection between the two, while leaving the nature and history of that connection to be worked out.
5. Annie’s phone and disturbing objects are inside the trailer
The trailer contains Annie’s phone, animal bones, yarn constructions, photographs, and more spiral imagery. Their presence deepens the mystery, but the episode does not establish who put each object there or what each one means.

6. Clark is missing, not proven guilty
Clark is among the absent Tsalal researchers, and Navarro argues he may still be alive. He is an obvious early person of interest because the episode connects him to Annie and places him within the Tsalal case. His whereabouts and guilt are both unresolved.
7. Tsalal’s funding leads to Tuttle United
The episode’s reporting traces Tsalal’s funding through NC Global Strategies to Tuttle United, a notable callback to Season 1. The funding connection is a fact about the institution’s backing; by itself, it does not show that Tsalal was pursuing a criminal project or establish a wider conspiracy.

8. Rose’s late partner connects to Rust Cohle
Rose Aguineau’s late love is Travis Cohle, Rust Cohle’s father. This is a link to the earlier season’s world, not evidence that Rust is involved in the current murders.
9. Danvers pushes Prior to test the timeline
Danvers redirects Peter from asking who drew the spiral to asking when it was drawn. She also turns the missing shoes into a question: what would make the researchers run outside without them? The method is practical—move from an observation to a question that could distinguish between explanations, rather than treating a striking clue as a complete answer.

| Directly seen or established | Investigators infer | Still unresolved in Episode 2 |

| The spiral appears in several places; Annie’s phone and other objects are in the Nook trailer; Clark is missing from Tsalal; funding traces through NC Global Strategies to Tuttle United. | Annie and Clark had a private relationship and used the trailer; the Tsalal deaths and Annie’s murder are connected cases. | Whether Clark killed Annie, where he is, what the spiral means, who made or placed the trailer’s objects, and whether the funding points to any wider wrongdoing. |
This distinction matters because several clues are suggestive without being conclusive. Episode 2 puts Clark and the recurring spiral at the center of the mystery, but it does not solve either one.
